We've had some folks asking if the sediment-filled waters of Woods Creek are just the normal aftermath of a heavy rainfall. Here's a view of Woods Creek as it joins the Maury River - the river, as well the other creeks and runs in the area are pretty clear. And Woods Creek is pretty clear until it hits the LGCC/W&L construction site. Maury River Voices has done a great job advocating for our local shared waterways. To be clear, nobody is complaining about the new golf course -the contractors and engineers they've hired just need to get this under control.

The Tribrook Club (formerly known as the LGCC/W&L Joint Venture) is once again offering a free golf course, with same-day delivery via Woods Creek. Some assembly required. This is a limited-time offer that will not be repeated until the next rainfall. Clubs and golf carts not included.

" B. The Certified Inspectors of the County Erosion and Sediment Control Department shall periodically inspect the land-disturbing activity in accordance with Sec 4VAC50-30-60 of the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Regulations to ensure compliance with the approved plan and to determine whether the measures required in the plan are effective in controlling erosion and sedimentation. Woods Creek is nearly dry in places (this is near the Waddell School before the recent rainfall). The creek is like a pond - it always has some surface water sitting in it, but the actual flow through it has slowed to a trickle in the current drought. Difficult conditions for the fish, turtles, and herons that depend on it.

Information received from a community member; we are passing it along without edits but ask that you do your own research on the topic if interested. The situation continues to be confusing to many of us and to City and County officials as well.

The state department of environmental quality has determined that the water use permit application by the Tribrook Golf Club is "controversial" and it will hold a second hearing on the topic next week, July 8th at Rockbridge High School - see below. The last hearing drew a large crowd of concerned city and county residents.

The recently-named "Tribrook" golf resort has acquired the land formerly owned by the Lexington Golf and Country Club, Inc, which was a beloved community-based and not-for-profit social club. The old Lexington Golf and Country Club , Inc. still operates under that legal name and it not the same as "the former Lexington Golf and Country Club" (a fictitious name) referred to by Tribrook in its publicity. Lexington Golf and Country Club, Inc. members will benefit from preferential access to the facilities owned and operated by Tribrook but cannot share in course profits without losing their 501 c 7 tax status.

The new ownership does not yet have the water withdrawal or zoning permits needed to open the course and related facilities, having given up most of the "grandfathered" rights that the old club claimed. The land being used for the course is currently zoned for single family houses by Rockbridge County. The County, at the request of the club developers, is making zoning changes that allow a new golf course, which will generate much more revenue than single-family housing and not require additional school classrooms.

PERMIT NAME: Virginia Water Protection (VWP) Permit for Surface Water Withdrawal No. 24-2886 Lexington Golf & Country Club

PURPOSE OF NOTICE: To announce a public hearing hosted by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for a “controversial” permit in accordance with § 10.1-1184.1 of the Code of Virginia.

PUBLIC HEARING: Rockbridge County High School Auditorium at 143 Greenhouse Rd, Lexington, VA 24450, on July 8, 2026, from 6:00p.m. to when public comment is complete or 9:00p.m., whichever is earlier.

PURPOSE OF HEARING: To obtain input on the Department's Summary of Comments from individuals who previously commented, either in person at the draft permit public hearing or in writing during the public comment periods. No new information will be accepted at the hearing. Only comments regarding the Department’s Summary of Comments will be accepted.

HOW TO COMMENT: DEQ accepts written and oral comments at public hearings. To make a statement at a public hearing regarding the Department’s public comment summary and response, write your name on a sign-in sheet available at the hearing. You may sign up only for yourself. The time allowed for each statement is set by the hearing officer.

Parking and shopping in downtown Lexington may be a little more difficult in the next year as both colleges and a number of businesses are expanding. But it's a good opportunity to visit our neighbor down the road if you haven't been there in a while - downtown Buena Vista has a quieter small-town feel and a variety of locally-owned shops including a bookstore, ice cream parlor, soda shop, pizzeria, and a coffee roaster. Let us know if you've tried these, or any of the other BV attractions lately.
