Our kids have been wanting to go back to Give Kids the World ever since we left it, having spent a magical week there during Micah’s wish trip back in December of 2023. It is such an amazing place for Wish Kids and their families, where we all feel seen, loved, and cared for during the most difficult time of our lives. While there, Micah helped create his “Mighty Micah” star, which now forever hangs in their special castle with hundreds of thousands of other stars, all with the name of a wish child…many of them no longer here ⭐️

As GKTW alumni, we have the gift to go back and spend a total of 2 days every year, for the rest of our lives, to visit the place that filled Micah and our family with so much adventure, wonder and love. When we visited there in 2023, we did not know that Micah would be leaving us only four short months later. The memories we spent together on his wish trip are memories we will forever cherish and be grateful for.

Last week, we were blessed with the opportunity to revisit Florida with my mom, (Grandma Sue) and make more memories while revisiting precious ones. We got to visit places that we have not been before while also taking a day to visit GKTW. The kids requested to attend on the day of the Christmas Party. While we love seeing the amazing Santa and Mrs Claus (who are there EVERY WEEK of the year!) we were thrilled to meet Kaylee the Penguin whom we did not get to meet two years ago. Our son Joey also immediately found Micah’s star at our star viewing…being back in the room with Micah’s star, and all those stars was touching in a way that words cannot describe.

Brian and I were brought to tears several times that day. The grief and the joy continue to coexist in a seamless way. It is amazing to me that our kids continue to love this place and want to continue visiting, as well as hoping to volunteer there one day. They shared memories of their first trip there and seemed to find strength and affirmation there.

Project Penguin also made a small appearance. We brought with us some jelly beans (Micah’s favorite, he used to pass them out at the hospital), a penguin key chain and sticker to pass out to Wish kids and their siblings as we saw them. Santa, Mrs Claus, and Kaylee Penguin got one too. 💛

It is both needed and hard to make new memories without Micah physically with us…but at the same time, doing things like this draw us even closer to him. We couldn’t help but feel his presence with us. Micah was so full of adventure and joy…while it makes us cry to be filled with these things without him here, we know that he is still here with us in our hearts and in spirit.

Below are photos of our recent trip, along with some from our first trip.

Thinking of you everyday Bubba…even more so lately during the holidays and as we follow along with others who are suffering. I will never forget three years ago, spending the holidays in the hospital while you fought a serious port infection. It was scary, lonely…but God was with us in the quietness of the hospital, in the realness of the New Year ringing in, not with a celebration, but with the reality that life is hard. We all miss you everyday But losing you here has my heart and mind even more attuned to Jesus and my own fiat; saying Yes to God, making the next small step forward, praying to be closer to Him and closer to you 💛 Thank you for leading me closer to Jesus. Help me to keep taking small steps forward, even when it’s hard. Help me change for the better in this New Year. Please ask Jesus to be with all those who are suffering at this time, that they find the quiet steadfast stillness of His Love during their trials.
We love you Bubba…always 💛
In Heaven….🙏💛

The truth is, the holidays for the bereaved are hard before the actual day itself. The anticipation, preparing, thinking about, affects each person a different way. There may be feelings of anxiousness or maybe they are surprisingly more tired or cranky. For some, they soldier on thru it all. For others, they completely change what was once routine. Some may find comfort in keeping traditions, but at some point, break down. Others may feel closer to their loved one as they continue to participate in the traditions they once did together. I think the experience is pretty fluid, changing from person to person, year to year, day to day, moment to moment. No right or wrong way thru it all.

For those missing a loved one during this holiday season, our hearts are with you. We understand that it is hard sometimes to know how to navigate thru this time. We hope you find peace and comfort with family and friends, and know that our Savior loves you and your beloved.

In memory of Micah and of his Grandpa Mike, we’ll have two candles shining among our family gathering tomorrow. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that help bring comfort. May we all find comfort in our sorrow 💛

Lyrics to Veni, Creator Spiritus:
Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast made.
O comforter, to Thee we cry, O heavenly gift of God Most High, O fount of life and fire of love, and sweet anointing from above.
Thou in Thy sevenfold gifts are known; Thou, finger of God's hand we own; Thou, promise of the Father, Thou Who dost the tongue with power imbue.
Kindle our sense from above, and make our hearts o'erflow with love; with patience firm and virtue high the weakness of our flesh supply.
Far from us drive the foe we dread, and grant us Thy peace instead; so shall we not, with Thee for guide, turn from the path of life aside.
Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow the Father and the Son to know; and Thee, through endless times confessed, of both the eternal Spirit blest.
Now to the Father and the Son, Who rose from death, be glory given, with Thou, O Holy Comforter, henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.

Ended our day in Columbus with a trip to drop off one more penguin…
This little guy looks a lot like the penguin stuffie that Micah loved.
I forgot to bring all the things to clean off the headstone today. Pardon the grass clippings…

We love our Bubba and are sad to have to spend another birthday here without him. But we hold onto the hope that we will be united again in Heaven.

Drop off complete! 💛
So incredibly grateful for all of the doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, and staff who walked with us during the most difficult time of our lives. It is nice to encourage them in the amazing work that they do and support other pediatric cancer patients in their fight against cancer.
Thank you for helping us collect all these donations!!! Project Penguin for this year was a success! 💛🐧
