This week, Soldiers, Army leaders, industry partners, veterans, and supporters from around the world are gathering in Washington, D.C., for the 2026 AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition.

The event brings together professional education, Army leadership, emerging technology, and conversations about the future of the force.

Why does that matter here in Kentucky?

Because the Army profession is not confined to Washington.

It lives in our Soldiers, veterans, Army civilians, cadets, families, employers, community partners, and the organizations that support them every day.

This Sunday, thousands of runners will come together in Washington, D.C., for the Army Ten-Miler.

Since its beginning in 1985, the event has represented more than competition. It promotes fitness, builds esprit de corps, strengthens community relationships, and brings Soldiers and supporters of the Army together.

Those values—service, connection, fitness, teamwork, and community—reach far beyond the starting line.

The Corporal Bill McMillan–Bluegrass Chapter wishes this year’s runners, volunteers, families, and supporters a great Army Ten-Miler.

OCTOBER 7 — AN IMPORTANT WEEK FOR THE ARMY COMMUNITY

The next several days bring together two major events that reflect the strength, professionalism, and community of America’s Army.

On October 11, Soldiers, veterans, families, and supporters will come together for the Army Ten-Miler in Washington, D.C.

That will be followed October 12–14 by the AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition—one of the Army community’s largest gatherings for professional development, discussion, and connection.

For the Corporal Bill McMillan–Bluegrass Chapter, these events are reminders that the Army community extends from the national level all the way to the communities we serve here in Kentucky.

We’ll be highlighting that connection throughout the coming week.

What is AUSA?

The Association of the United States Army is more than a national organization — it is a network of Soldiers, veterans, families, community members, businesses and supporters connected by a shared commitment to America’s Army.

Corporal William “Bill” McMillan III was more than the name behind our chapter.

Bill served in the United States Army as a combat medic with the 25th Infantry Division. His fellow Soldiers remembered his determination to make sure those around him were prepared to respond when lives were on the line.

While serving in Baghdad, Bill was mortally wounded when his armored patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device. His training helped prepare his squad to respond in the aftermath. He was posthumously awarded a second Bronze Star Medal.

Today, the Corporal Bill McMillan–Bluegrass Chapter of the Association of the United States Army is proud to carry his name.

His story reminds us that service is ultimately about people — the people we serve beside, the people we prepare, and the people whose legacy we are responsible for remembering.
