La Leche League meetings are free and open to all pregnant or nursing mothers, partners, babies, and kids. There will be snacks and baby/toddler related books available for borrowing.

Breast milk offers babies complete nutrition—proteins, carbohydrates, fats, hormones, and antibodies that protect against infection—plus it's a natural laxative, always at the right temperature, in the right amount. Nursing also releases oxytocin, the "love hormone," fostering a deep bond and sense of calm between mother and baby. And lactating mothers burn roughly 500 extra calories a day.

The meeting will be guided by a local LLL leader, trained by LLL International and experienced in nursing her own children. We'll cover many more benefits, and moms will have a chance to share stories and support each other, especially helpful for those feeling overwhelmed in the early weeks.

La Leche League of Lexington will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 14th at 10:30am at Grace Episcopal Church, 123 W Washington St., Lexington. You can find the Canterbury room on the second floor (accessible by elevator).

Having a baby can be an overwhelming joy and challenge. Our meetings help to mitigate fears about breastfeeding and help build the self confidence to continue.

LLL was founded in 1956 by mothers who came together in a time when most babies were given artificial milk and there are currently more than 50 countries who have initiated LLL groups. LLL leaders have all nursed their own babies and have had extensive training through LLL International with access to up-to-date medical knowledge in the field of lactation.

All pregnant and nursing families with babies and children are welcome to the meetings, a lending library is available on many aspects of birth, breastfeeding and parenting and snacks will be provided.

Please contact Cindy at 540-460-3966 or [email protected] with questions or needs.

LLL PROMOTES SMOOTH SAILING WITH BREASTFEEDING AT JUNE MEETING

How to navigate successfully through the rough waters of breastfeeding will be the focus of discussion for the June 9th meeting for La Leche League, to be held in the library of Grace Episcopal Church, 10:30 AM, located at 123 W. Washington St, Lexington, VA

LLL meetings provide a forum to ask questions and share with other moms the many concerns that arise in the early days of breastfeeding -understanding feeding cues from the baby, how to know baby is getting enough milk, ensuring adequate milk supply, strategies to prevent sore ni***es, how to get much needed rest when baby seems to be nursing round the clock, best positions for nursing and creating a positive dialogue with all family members. These and many other topics will be shared while the meeting is led by a LLL leader, who has breastfed her own children, has gone through advanced training and can provide up-to-date medical knowledge.

Pregnant, nursing moms, partners and all babies and children are welcome at meetings, where a lending library is available with books devoted to raising healthy, loving children and snacks will be provided. Home visits can also be arranged for moms needing extra care.

For more information and/or directions, contact Cindy at 540-460-3966 or email - [email protected].

“Muscle and Milk" captures a powerful truth about modern motherhood: strength and caregiving are not opposites, they coexist.

Photographed by husband-and-wife duo Anita Clark and Paul Wenham-Clarke and shortlisted for both the 2025 AOP Open Awards and the Sony World Photography Awards, the image features three rugby players breastfeeding their babies moments after finishing a match. The result is both striking and deeply human. A portrait of women refusing to choose between ambition, athleticism, and motherhood.

In honor of Mother's Day, local La Leche League will celebrate the gift of motherhood on Tuesday, May 12 meeting @ 10:30am in the library of the Grace Episcopal Church at 123 W Washington St, Lexington, VA. There is elevator accessibility at the back of the church.

Breastfeeding creates a special bond between mother and baby as well as providing the best possible nutrients. Breast milk contains protective substances which are critical for the baby's gut biome such as lactoferrin (to transport and absorb iron), secretory antibodies (IgA IgG) and inflammatory cells- leukocytes or white blood cells. Premature babies especially are vulnerable without mother's milk and can develop a life-threatening illness called NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis). Without breast milk their intestinal tract starts to become very sick and they are then unable to absorb nutrients. If babies are too weak to suckle, doctors will recommend that mothers pump their breast milk or use donor breast milk available from several milk banks in Virginia to then be fed to the babies.

Meetings are led by certified Leaders who have breastfed their babies and studied the field of lactation to provide up to date information to help nursing mothers succeed. All pregnant and nursing mothers/partners and children are welcome to meetings where a lending library is available and snacks are often served.
