You know the perfect place to be this afternoon? At Rocking The Docks with us! The sun is shining here on the Lewes coast and we've got music, food, beverages & fun for a GREAT cause. We'll also have our "First Settler of Lewes" books for sale AND we're announcing a VERY fun contest at the event today.

The BIGGEST thanks to our Master Naturalists and volunteers for helping this morning at the Preserve. The focus this morning was on removing the highly invasive "autumn olive" w**d. It's an ecological threat to wooded areas because it crowds out native plants and degrades local ecosystems as a result.

We will have more opportunities for volunteering in the very near future - if you are interested in finding out more, please be sure to join our volunteer mailing list at our website: fourthstreetpreserve.org/volunteer.

It's looking like a lovely Lewes weather weekend and just a few more days until we are Rocking the Docks by the seaside! We are grateful and beyond thrilled to be back at Rocking The Docks for a special benefit show supporting our Fourth Street Preserve restoration efforts.

They have not one but TWO bands - local legends, The Funsters, and also bringing the musical heat - Hot Sauce Band! Last year, this incredible event helped us reach our fundraising goal to secure and permanently protect the Preserve. We are thrilled for what is in store later this year when we open to the public and funds raised at this show will directly benefit the work being done.

We are looking for helping hands from the community to assist our team with the removal of invasive plant species this Saturday, June 6th beginning at 9 am. If you are able and willing to volunteer we would be grateful for your assistance! Please RSVP to Pam Costanzi via text or call (215)460-3757 so she knows to expect you and can coordinate directly.

Please meet on Fourth Street near the "Save Our Forest" white post sign. Please bring work/garden gloves and be sure to wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt and bug spray because it is tick season.

We've "spotted" lots of cute creatures the past few days...it's fawning season on the preserve! Lots of little ones making their debut into the world right around dusk, hidden in the tall grasses. Mom takes special care to clean the new arrival(s) and nurse as the fawns figure out how to stand on their four legs. Within an hour or so off they go together - wobbly legs and all!

Fawns are born with a camouflaged coat and virtually no scent. To avoid drawing predators, the doe leaves the fawn hidden in tall grass or brush. She typically returns only 2 to 3 times a day for brief nursing sessions. If you spot an unattended fawn, it is completely normal behavior. The doe is likely nearby foraging and you should always leave the fawn alone.

Yesterday's much needed rain helps all the fungi in the preserve! Fungi serve as "nature's cleanup" vital to Delaware forests by acting as nature's decomposers, nutrient recyclers, and soil stabilizers, which maintain healthy ecosystems and protect local waterways. They break down dead wood and leaves, improve soil structure, and form symbiotic mycorrhizal networks that help trees absorb water and nutrients.🍄

Happy World Migratory Bird Day! Today is a global campaign celebrating migratory birds while raising awareness about the importance of protecting them and the habitats they depend on. It also highlights the threats these birds face and the need for international cooperation to conserve them across continents. Local conservation efforts—like our preservation efforts towards preserving wetlands, planting native species, reducing pollution, and protecting open spaces—play a vital role in supporting the migratory routes and resting habitats birds rely on during their long journeys.

No bird-brained ideas here—protecting habitats matters.🦅🪿🦉🦆
