A peek behind the scenes at our large fall planting volunteer event of over 700+ plants, trees and shrubs this past Saturday, October 10th. We created several areas that will grow into small mini forest clusters as well as pollinator drifts to attract insects and birds. We ended the day by building fences to protect all the new plantings.

The timing of this project was to make sure a significant amount could be planted and take root before the ground freezes. We're thankful Mother Nature watered for us on Sunday too!

We're so grateful to be part of this communi-tree! A group of 40 volunteers comprised of master naturalists, community volunteers, Scout Troop 1 & their leaders, Fourth Street Preserve Task Force members & Friends of the Fourth Street Preserve spend their Saturday helping us move, plant and secure over 700 plants, shrubs and trees in several different concentrated areas. Special thanks to the City of Lewes and Delaware Forest Service for their assistance making today's efforts such a success. 🌱🌳

Please note: Because of our amazing turnout and tomorrow's predicted weather, we were able to finish ALL the work today so tomorrow (October 11th) planting time has been cancelled.

UPDATED 10/10: Due to a wonderful turn out that allowed us to finish all of our planting and tomorrow's forecast, we have cancelled Sunday, Oct. 11th!

We are looking for helping hands for fall planting in the Preserve on Saturday, October 10th and Sunday, October 11 from 9 am - 3 pm! Join us for some of the day, all of the day or both days - we are grateful for whatever time you are able to give to help our forest grow.

Join the Fourth Street Preserve Task Force team of Master Naturalists, local scouts and Friends of the Fourth Street Preserve planting of several hundred plants, trees and shrubs in the Fourth Street Preserve. All volunteers must bring their own work/garden gloves, a bottle of water and dress appropriately for the weather and terrain/environment. Sturdy, closed toe shoes are a must. We also recommend wearing long sleeves, looser clothing, sunscreen and bug spray.

You are welcome to sign up for as many shifts as you would like. Details on exactly where to meet and your date of point of contact will be shared closer to the date. The finalists are in, and now the decision is in YOUR hands! Our resident female, male and juvenile bald eagles need names selected so cast your vote and help the winning names become part the Fourth Street Preserve History.

A little progress update:

While we had hoped to welcome the community to the Preserve in late Fall 2026, our updated opening timeline is now Spring 2027. Important site, infrastructure and restoration work is still underway, and we want to allow the time needed to complete this work before opening the Preserve for public access.
In the meantime, plenty is happening at the Preserve! 🌿

Over the coming months, our volunteers and project partners will continue:
🌿 Removing invasive species
💧 Continuing hydrology studies
🌳 Removing fallen and hazardous trees
🥾 Preparing the landscape for future trails and public access
🌱 Planting more than 700 native trees, shrubs and plants this fall

We know many of you are eager to experience the Preserve, and we appreciate your patience and continued enthusiasm as this work moves forward. And there will be opportunities to be part of it! We'll be sharing details soon about our fall volunteer planting efforts and hope you'll join us. 🌱

Just one of many fungi in the preserve. These fragile mushrooms, commonly known as "bonnets" are from the large genus Mycena. They feature small bell-shaped caps, thin stems, and white spore prints. One of nature's biggest recyclers, they are mostly recognized as decomposers of dead plant.🍄‍🟫
