We had a great discussion with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Region 7 (IA, KS, MO, NE) and City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department on the continued impact of redlining and related discriminatory policy--especially on children. Excited to continue the conversation and to conspire with these amazing people on how to address the issues and build a healthier and more equitable future.

Next Tuesday Oct. 1st, the We Are Wyandotte crew will present some of the research from the HEAT report and will participate in a panel with the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department and EPA Region 7 office about how the history of segregation and oppression continues to directly impact the lives and health of our communities.

Come on out this Thursday!

We love our diverse community here in Wyandotte County, and it doesn't get much better than getting to share delicious food, music, and creativity with people from our many immigrant and refugee communities.

Join us this Thursday evening from 4pm-7pm at 424 Minnesota Ave, KCKS 66101 for a wonderful evening of celebrating the beauty that is all of us coming from different cultures and backgrounds but building a community together where we lift each other up and are enriched by what each of us bring to the table. Why Health Equity?

One of the primary goals of the Community Health Council and We Are Wyandotte is to promote health equity in Wyandotte County.

At the Kansas Public Health Association conference last week, they talked about how all of the attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion have resulted in pressure on public health departments and nonprofits to change their priorities and messaging.

We cannot.

There is no public health without health equity. One of the most basic building blocks of public health is to look at what is working and what isn't. If we find that rural communities consistently lack access to healthy food and healthcare, or that children on the 'wrong side of the tracks' have higher rates of asthma and lead present in their blood, we have to investigate the root causes and work along with the community for solutions. This is public health work--to work towards a world where everyone has opportunity for a healthy and fulfilled life, with access to transportation, healthy food, healthcare, safe and affordable housing, and good safe jobs.

When we see in Wyandotte County that those still living in redlined communities have more than 20 years lower life expectancy than those in the suburban communities in the same county; when we can clearly point to the history of exclusionary and unequal policies and their effects to create these different outcomes--it is on us to speak the truth about the data and facts we are seeing, and to do our part to get our entire community to pitch in to address these challenges together.
