🌿 The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has approved a Notice of Intent (NOI) to establish rules and regulations for the new Louisiana Conservation Incentive Program, which will be administered by LDWF.

The purpose of the program is to address the natural resource concerns of private landowners and provide funding to enhance their management efforts. The Louisiana Conservation Incentive Program was created during the 2025 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature and could receive an appropriation of funding from the 2026 Regular Session that ended June 1.

🔊 LDWF Secretary Tyler Bosworth:
“Private lands make up 89% of the Louisiana landscape, and these lands all face challenges unique to each region. This program allows us to achieve scalable impacts benefiting wildlife and their associated habitats across the state by incentivizing private land owners to face these challenges head on with the funding needed to do so.’’

The NOI establishes application procedures, project selection criteria, and other administrative regulations governing the program. A request for proposals and sign-up period will be announced once funding is finalized. Note:
▪️ Landowners with fee title and lessees with an active long-term lease are eligible to apply for program funding.
▪️ Funding will only be considered for tracts than 20 acres.

Public comments on the Notice of Intent will be accepted through August 27.

If you grew up hunting in Beauregard and Vernon Parishes, then you’ve seen the changes happening to our land — and not for the better when it comes to wildlife habitat.

More and more of the places we grew up hunting are disappearing. Solar farms are taking thousands of acres. Data centers are taking thousands more. Carbon capture projects continue expanding, and now politicians are trying to sell off some of the best habitat and one of the last truly viable areas for quail left in Louisiana.

If we don’t start paying attention and speaking up, our children and grandchildren may never get the chance to hunt the way we did. They may never hear a covey rise at daylight, walk piney woods behind good dogs, or experience the traditions that shaped so many of us growing up.

This isn’t just about land. It’s about preserving our heritage, our wildlife, and a way of life that means everything to the people of this region.

Sen. Bill Cassidy has quietly drafted legislation to transfer about 140,000 acres of the Kisatchie National Forest to Grant Parish.

🪶 Quail Fact Friday! 🪶

Did you know a bobwhite quail “clutch” is the group of eggs laid in a nest by a hen? A typical clutch can contain 12–14 eggs, and the nesting process can take up to 45 days from start to hatch. Healthy nesting habitat plays a huge role in helping quail populations thrive and keeping more birds on the landscape.

At the Heart of Kisatchie Quail Forever chapter, education and conservation go hand in hand. We’re proud to share information like this to help spread awareness about the importance of habitat, wildlife conservation, and the future of bobwhite quail right here in our area.

Every nest, every hatch, and every acre of quality habitat matters. 🐦🌾

In our summer “Off-Season Issue,” we explore the season before the hunt.

The off-season is about prescribed fire and planting native grass. In bird dogs learning their craft. In the belief that today’s habitat work – not nostalgia for a romanticized past – will determine what comes next.

This is the season of stewardship. Of investing in future birds, future hunters, future bird dogs, and future upland landscapes teeming with the upland wildlife we cherish. Summer, in many ways, is where the real work begins.
