In October 2025, the Administration announced the latest mass layoffs for the U.S. Department of Education, eliminating most of the staff from both the Office of Special Education and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. This decision follows earlier historic layoffs, which cut nearly half the Department's positions in March 2025.

The Department of Education must be able to support states and school districts and effectively administer federally mandated programs and funding appropriated by Congress. Reducing the Department of Education’s capacity breaks America’s promise of education and developmental support for all children and is a severe threat to ensuring every child has every opportunity to reach their full potential.

Fantastic news. Thank you to everyone that took time to call, email and advocate for this funding to be sent to schools.

National PTA is pleased to see that the Administration will release the $6.9 billion in funding for educational programs that was being withheld. This funding is critical for the schools, families and children that rely upon it and especially as a new school year begins.

Thank you, PTA advocates for raising your voice to urge the release of the funding and for taking action for our nation’s public schools, families and students. We must keep speaking up and out for our nation’s children, families and schools, and we urge advocates everywhere to join us.
