LEECHBURG TRAIL UPDATE
July 28, 2024

The purchase of the Rosebud railroad line right-of-way along the Allegheny River by Armstrong Trails has made the development of a trail along the Kiskiminetas river from Schenley through Leechburg to Hyde Park an obvious extension.

The Armstrong Trails purchased right-of-way includes a four-mile stretch along the Kiski toward Leechburg. ATI has granted an easement to Armstrong Trails along Silicon Drive to extend the four-mile piece to the Leechburg boarder.

The LACDC has taken on the role of sponsor and owner of the trail through Leechburg. We have acquired all of easements and are finalizing transfer of ownership of a section of the trail to the LACDC.

Most of the funding for the project is in place in the form of a $60,000 donation from a Leechburg High School alum and a $100,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. We are awaiting word on an additional grant from another foundation. Design of the trail is complete and a contractor has been engaged. Once the final property is acquired and all the funding is in place construction can begin in this construction season.

Once the Gilpin Leechburg Trail is completed a biker will be able to enter the trail in Leechburg and ride to Schenley along the Kiskiminetas and then along the Allegheny to East Brady and beyond.

Benefits of the trail include:

• Promoting healthy lifestyles through outdoor exercise.
• Enhancing local tourism and economic development.
• Providing safe, scenic routes for biking and walking.
• Connecting communities along the river.

It’s time for our first spotlight of the summer: One Idea Books & Gifts! Owners Lindsey Smith and Alexandra Frazen are both authors were already both co-founders of Get It Done, where they guide their students through the journey of becoming an author. Lindsey was born and raised in Leechburg, and when the space next to Chuck Smith Flooring became available to rent, the business was ready to roll. Smith’s mother and late father founded Chuck Smith Flooring 36 years prior, and now she was ready to open her own business in town.

Smith says “My family having a business in town also helped me understand entrepreneurship and what it takes to operate a retail location.

This made Leechburg a natural fit for our book and gift shop. I am forever grateful to have grown up in a supportive community, and I look forward to having a space that can give back to it.”

Growing up in Leechburg provides Smith a unique background for the store. “My most formative experiences took place in this town, including my early years, where teachers encouraged my writing and creation. (Fun fact: My first published piece was a poem I wrote in 5th grade. My teacher, Carol Vietto, encouraged me to submit it for publication, and it was eventually published in a poetry anthology.) In high school, I expanded into teaching workshops through student council conferences. My advisor, Amy Barley, was always open to my ideas and encouraged me to try new things. Having a community like Leechburg, and an education at Leechburg School District, definitely helped me explore and grow my interests.”

Coming up, the store will be havingThe TIny Book Fair is happening on June 10!

Participating with the community-wide yard sale, One Idea Books & Gifts will be hosting The Tiny Book Fair. They’ll have more than 200 new books, as well as discounts up to 50% off retail. It’s a great time to grab books for summer reading—at a great price. There will also be a used-book section where all proceeds will go towards purchasing books for the Leechburg Public Library.

Be sure to stop down on the 10th and check out one of Leechburg’s newest stores!
