We want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the folks at the Homestake American Legion- Post 31 Lead, SD who stopped by the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center this morning and installed a new flag and flagpole!

We’re so happy to have the Stars and Stripes properly represented at SURF!

Next Tuesday is our normal meeting time. Instead of our formal monthly meeting, we are having a Christmas get-together. NO cooking, NO gifts, NO stress – just time to socialize with friends. Bring your significant other and a snack to share if you wish. Beverages are available at the bar. Hope to see you there, 6PM at the VFW in Deadwood on December 9th. American Legion Post #31 Commander, Oz Enderby congratulates Johnathan Burleson, for winning the Boys State Samsung scholarship.

Johnathan Burleson, son of Lead residents Jarred and Samantha Burleson, was awarded a $1200 scholarship at 2025 South Dakota Boys State. Samsung created a $5M scholarship fund in 1996 to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to South Korea’s aid during the Korean War. Applicants must attend Boys State and be a direct descendant of a Korean War veteran. Johnathan’s great-grandfather, Johnnie Stephens, fought in the Korean War. He returned home to Gothenburg, NE, and became Commander of the local American Legion Post. Johnathan will now compete for a $10K Samsung scholarship at the national level.

Each spring Post #31 sends High School Juniors and Seniors to Boys State to learn their rights and responsibilities as citizens through hands-on governance of imaginary cities and states. It builds confidence in the boys and most go on to do extraordinary things in their lives. Johnathan is already on that track. He follows his parents’ example of giving back to the community by volunteering for numerous events. He is diligent in his studies and extracurricular pursuits. This summer he will tour Europe for sixteen days as a percussionist with the South Dakota Ambassadors for music.

The winner of the American Legion Post 31 and VFW, Post 5969 2025 Meat Raffle is Jill DeMilia, former Sergeant, US Army. Jill and her husband Frank are retired and live in Deadwood. She has been issued a Gift Certificate valued at $1,500.00 to be used towards purchasing items sold at The Butcher Block in Spearfish.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make our 3rd Annual Meat Raffle a success. This fund raiser allows us to send high school students to Boys State and the State Trooper Academy, provide scholarships to Seniors attending technical schools, and to support many other veterans and community programs.

Special thanks go to The Butcher Block and Junek’s Jeep Chrysler of Spearfish. Both businesses donated $250 towards the prize. Several other business owners purchased multiple tickets or allowed us to sell tickets in their establishment. When you are out shopping or looking for a bite to eat, please consider supporting these businesses in the same manner they have supported us.

We had a great group turn out to help place flags on the graves at the Black Hills National Cemetery this morning. 22,000 headstones were completed in under an hour by all the volunteers.🇺🇸
