What a great inspiration
Every Saturday at 8, a line of motorcycles came down the county road past an animal shelter outside Zanesville, Ohio. And each week an old woman at the fence lifted one hand off a leash to wave.
That went on for six years. The riders never knew her name. To them she was the lady with the slow dogs.
Her name is Avis. The shelter keeps its oldest dogs in a back row of 14 kennels. Old dogs get passed over for walks when a place is short on hands. Avis had walked all 14 every morning since she retired, each dog alone, 10 minutes apiece. The slowest was Butterbean, a three-legged beagle.
On the last Saturday in April there was no one at the fence. The next week it was empty again. Coral pulled the whole column into the gravel lot. She's the road captain, a grandmother of five with a gray braid down the back of her vest.
At the front desk she asked where the lady was.
Avis, 84, had broken her hip on her own back steps. Rehab would be three months if it went well. The girl at the desk told Coral the old dogs were getting out about twice a week, and looked at the floor while she said it.
Coral asked which dogs were hers.
"The back row. All 14."
She walked out to 39 idling motorcycles and held up both hands. The engines shut off.
That morning 40 people in leather vests walked 14 gray-faced dogs along the fence line, a few at a time. By noon somebody had a clipboard, and the front desk had 40 signed waivers. Five riders would come every weekday before work, and the whole club would take the weekends. Most of them had never been inside a shelter.
They kept it up for 11 weeks without missing a morning. Butterbean's walks went to a welder, at about the speed of a parade. Two riders had adoption papers in on old dogs before June was out.
Avis came back on a Saturday in the middle of July, with a walker that had a tennis ball on each back leg. The motorcycles were parked along the fence when her daughter's car pulled in. Every dog in the back row was out and leashed.
Avis took Butterbean's leash. Coral took Avis by the elbow.
Who showed up for you when you couldn't do it yourself?
