It was such an amazing week stacked with events, SFN's 1st birthday, and culminating in an enormous science and technology expo!

It was an honor to present genuine NASA items in support of Scott Altman's keynote talk at the West Charleston Library, participate in NV Energy's Energy Night at the Clark County Library, reach the students at Snyder ES with an aerospace Orion Session, visit the Darnell ES Superstars for career day, and participate as an exhibitor at the Las Vegas Science & Technology Festival.

These events help keep STEM at the forefront of students' minds, encouraging them to dare to discover!

Congratulations to our founder and CEO Garrett Oberdin, for being recognized by the Governor's Office of Science, Innovation and Technology as Nevada's Southern STEM Advocate of the Year! Garrett led a year full of advocacy with efforts and initiatives through both the Nevada National Security Site and STEM for Nevada. We know 2026 at SFN will mark a momentous shift in scale and are proud to have Garrett lead the way!

SFN would like to extend congratulations to all the recipients. They are the dedicated, day to day workers transforming the STEM education landscape in Nevada, building an ecosystem where everyone dares to discover!

SFN is beyond grateful to announce we have been allocated 94 laptops via the General Services Administration Federal Surplus Property Donation Program! This is a tremendous win that will exponentially expand our growth and scope in 2026!

These laptops cement the quality and scale of our upcoming MECH workshops this summer, where students will code their own engineering projects, build the circuits themselves, and prototype ingenuity and innovation in real time.

Additionally, these machines will serve as the backbone for our upcoming SFN Field Laboratories. In these pop-up labs, Clark County School District students will have unprecedented access to industry software, tools, and equipment. Here students will develop skills critical to STEM fields, fostering a new generation of technical innovators, marking Southern Nevada as a premier STEM pipeline.

2025 marked an amazing year for STEM for Nevada. From our founding in May, we reached over 1500 Clark County School District students through our direct, in-class Orion Sessions, CCSD career days, and afterschool STEM events.

We are incredibly proud to have partnered with 11 schools across the valley, bringing equitable, hands-on STEM experiences to students, with over half our partner schools being Title I recipients.

Looking forward we have big things planned for 2026! Orion Sessions will be back and better than ever, with new modules and upgrades to our existing Electricity and Magnetism module. March marks the debut of our Mission Control Experience at the Fremont Academy of Medical Sciences at Fremont PDMS STEM night. April and May will bring great opportunities for families leading up to the Las Vegas Science & Technology Festival, and this Summer MECH arrives in Vegas!

Thank you to all our sponsors, board members, program partners, and CCSD partner schools for a great 2025 and we look forward to an even better 2026 where we all continue to dare to discover!

SFN is incredibly grateful to all the schools that welcomed us into their classrooms through November and December. The end of the semester came at light speed as we reached a new school each week closing out 2025.

Just before thanksgiving we had the pleasure of presenting to Lomie G. Heard Magnet School. Through December we were invited to visit Sandy S. Miller Elementary School, Fremont Academy of Medical Sciences at Fremont PDMS, and to close out 2025 we visited Lyal Burkholder MS . There were so many great questions across all the visits, and some very inquisitive minds that clearly have a bright future in STEM.

We look forward to 2026 where we can continue to dare to discover!

"I want to know when scientists will start giving people super powers." The question on the table was 'why is STEM important to you'. One fourth grader knew their priorities and wanted some accountability for why he couldn't fly yet.

STEM for Nevada was grateful to have the opportunity to present to the GATE students at Ernest May ES. We made observations on charged particles, electrostatic forces, ionization, and electromagnetic induction. To test our hypotheses we ran experiments to test the composition of air using the discussed concepts and ampules of excitable gases. Rest assured, using the scientific method, we discovered that while there is significantly more nitrogen in air, there is still plenty of oxygen to go around.

A special thanks to Alex Doom, a lead systems engineer at JT4, for participating in this event. He brought a unique perspective and explored the effect charged particles can have on aircraft operations.

Lightning struck about 45 times at May ES as the Marshalls dared to discover!

Last week we had the privilege of presenting our all new electricity and magnetism module to the students at Darnell ES during our Orion Session! During the session we learned about alternating current (AC), direct current (DC), electromagnetic induction, and ionization. Utilizing a Van de Graaff generator, students got to make their own lightning. At the conclusion of the session the mad scientists in the class got the chance to touch lightning from our miniature Tesla coil. It was an experience that will last a lifetime as the 5th graders at Darnell continue to dare to discover!

Home means Nevada,
Home means the hills,
Home means the sage and the pine.
Out by the Truckee, silvery rills,
Out where the sun always shines,

Here is the land which I love the best,
Fairer than all I can see.
Deep in the heart of the golden west
Home means Nevada to me.

Happy Nevada day to the State of Nevada! Today we celebrate the Silver State; a land of pioneers, dreamers, and innovators! At STEM for Nevada, home means Nevada, where every student has the opportunity and encouragement to dare to discover!

Career days are often the first chance that students get to see the possibilities outside of what they observe in their families everyday. It is so important that they see what's available to dream about, aspire to, and work towards. To make a state as great as Nevada excel, we need the very best first responders, the most attentive teachers, and the boldest STEM professionals. There are so many tremendous careers for students to align towards and STEM for Nevada was proud to represent scientists and engineers!

Reaching hundreds of students across two schools we strove to illuminate possibilities at the very edge of human achievement. What we develop today with be the foundation that these students use, in the future, to dare to discover!
