Why remember Melvin
Speaking for myself, Melvin was a remarkable human being. The man was 55 when he passed in 2018. He left us way too soon, and he still had a lot of life in him. In that brief time, he wrote and arranged over 2,000 songs. He made good use of his time and left us so much. He had a special gift, the gift of making music. I have taken it upon myself to keep this man’s dream alive and to share with the world his talent.
He was definitely a part of my life. A part that made my life more bearable. In a world, where we are surrounded by constant negativity he was the one bright spot that you could count on seeing at the end of the week.
I am not saying that choir practice was the end all, or even that it was magical while he was there. But listening to his music at the end of the week was something else. He also made us believe that we could sing any piece of music.
For example, one year he wanted to sing Handel’s Massiah for Christmas. Surely a very complicated piece that was made to be sung by a large choir. We sang it with only 15 people. Singing that with Melvin was one of our greatest achievements. He had no doubts that we could make that music shine, and because of his encouragement, we did.
