The Birthday Photo
Every year on her birthday, 8-year-old Sophie received the same gift.
A photograph.
No card.
No message.
No sender.
Just a single photo.
The first photo showed her sleeping in her crib as a baby.
The second showed her first day of school.
The third showed her feeding ducks at a park.
The problem was...
Nobody in her family had ever taken those pictures.
Her mother swore she had never seen them before.
As Sophie grew older, the mystery only deepened.
Who was taking the photos?
And how?
On her 12th birthday, a new picture arrived.
This one terrified her.
It showed Sophie standing at her mailbox.
The photo had been taken the day before.
Someone was watching her.
That night, she couldn't sleep.
The next morning, she made a decision.
She would catch whoever was sending them.
For weeks, Sophie watched the mailbox.
Nothing.
Then, on a rainy afternoon, she saw an elderly man quietly place an envelope inside.
She ran outside.
"Wait!"
The man froze.
"Did you send these photos?"
The old man looked down.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then tears filled his eyes.
"Yes."
Sophie's heart raced.
"Why?"
The man reached into his pocket and handed her a faded picture.
It showed a little girl.
She looked exactly like Sophie.
Same smile.
Same eyes.
Same laugh.
"My daughter," he whispered.
Sophie's chest tightened.
The old man explained that his daughter had passed away many years ago.
And every time he saw Sophie growing up in the neighborhood, she reminded him of the child he had lost.
He never meant to scare her.
He only wanted to remember.
Sophie's eyes filled with tears.
Then she noticed something written on the back of the faded photo.
A name.
Her mother's name.
Confused, she took the picture home.
When her mother saw it, she began crying instantly.
Because the little girl in the photo wasn't a stranger.
She had been Sophie's older sister.
A sister Sophie never knew existed.
A sister who had died before Sophie was born.
The old man wasn't a stalker.
He was Sophie's grandfather.
A grandfather her family had lost contact with years ago.
For twelve years, he had secretly watched his family grow...
Hoping one day he would find the courage to come back.
