✨ Late night shenanigans with Apex and Gypsy 🥰

🥺 Slowly watching our dream for the Misfits come to life, has made every struggle and sacrifice worth it! 

💡 Fun fact… Gypsy (she’s the one with the white patch on her chest in the video) was the first of our rescues to find a permanent home with us. She came to us at about 2 years old, 5 years ago.

👏🏼 I’ll have to do a proper post soon to introduce her, share her story and reveal which of our current (and recent) Misfits we found out she’s related to through DNA testing 🧬

🌡️ How do we monitor temperatures in the kennel buildings?

🤔 This was a question we recently received and we’re excited to share because we know there are others out there that may be looking for a way to monitor temps this summer.

💁🏻‍♀️ Each of our kennel buildings is equipped with a WiFi Temperature & Humidity Sensor. These little devices allow us to monitor temperature and humidity levels around the clock from our phones from anywhere we are.

☀️ If temperatures or humidity levels ever go outside of the ranges we’ve set, we receive instant alerts so we can address the situation right away.

🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s impossible for us to be in three places at once so having real-time monitoring gives us peace of mind knowing we’ll always be notified if something needs our attention.

There are quite a few WiFi temperature sensors on the market, and what works best for one person may not be the best fit for another. After researching and testing options, Temp Stick has been the solution that works best for our needs.

☀️ Enzo was excited to assist with ranch chores this morning ☀️

😍 This handsome guy was up bright and early making sure all the morning chores were completed to his exact standards… which mostly involved riding around, looking adorable, and offering moral support. 😆

💁🏻‍♀️ Enzo loves being part of whatever you’re doing, whether that’s exploring new places, going for walks, playing with friends, or simply hanging out with his people. His goofy personality and big heart make him impossible not to love.

🏠 Now all he needs is a forever family to call his own.

🐕 If you’re looking for a loyal sidekick who’s always ready for the next adventure, Enzo is still searching for his happily ever after.

💈 It’s that time of year again, when all the shepherds blow their coats. Anyone else have a shepherd and can’t stand to see the floof just hanging out? 🫣

And don’t worry, of all the things we encounter with these hooligans I completely realize the craziness with patches of floof being the thing that bothers me 😩

🧬 Fiona’s DNA Results Are In! 🧬

And the verdict? Fiona is…

🐾 61% American Staffordshire Terrier
🐾 23% Bulldog
🐾 13% American Pit Bull Terrier
🐾 3% Chihuahua (because genetics likes to keep us guessing 😆)

AND

🥰 100% Frank’s daughter!

Honestly, these results make perfect sense once you know Fiona! Her American Staffordshire Terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier roots help explain her affectionate, people-loving personality and her enthusiasm for life. These breeds are known for being loyal, playful, and deeply connected to their humans.

Her Bulldog ancestry likely contributes to her goofy charm. Bulldogs are famous for their big personalities and love of companionship—two things Fiona has in abundance.

And that tiny splash of Chihuahua? We’re pretty sure that’s where she gets her confidence and occasional “main character energy.” 😂

What we love most about DNA testing is that it helps us better understand the traits, behaviors, and needs of the dogs in our care. But at the end of the day, Fiona is so much more than a list of breeds.

She’s a happy, affectionate little lady who never misses an opportunity to make a new friend. Whether she’s playing, snuggling, or simply showing off her infectious smile, Fiona brings joy everywhere she goes.

The bonus? We were able to confirm that Fiona is Frank’s daughter.

On this episode of Misfits after dark… 🫣 😂

🌙 Desert summers come with their challenges, but summer nights? Those belong to the dogs. 🐾

☀️ One of the ways we keep the Misfits happy, healthy, and active during the hotter months is by adjusting our schedule with the seasons. Activities and playtime happen early in the morning and again in the evening as the sun sets—or after dark when temperatures allow.

Not only is nighttime play more comfortable, but it also helps reduce the risk of overheating while allowing dogs to safely burn energy, explore, and enjoy enrichment during the coolest parts of the day.

And if you ask Enzo, summer nights might just be the best part of living in the desert. 🥰

It’s true! We’ve experienced people struggle with boundaries when it comes to dogs and trying to explain the importance of boundaries can be difficult if the person is not receptive.

Please ask before ever reaching out to touch a dog and respect the owner/handler if the answer is no.

📡 OFF-GRID FAQ: How do you get internet at the Ranch?

🤷🏻‍♀️ One of the questions we received since moving to the ranch is how we’re able to run a rescue from a property that’s completely off-grid.

The answer is simple: Starlink!

😳 When we first purchased the property, one of our biggest concerns was that there is no cell service here. No bars. No signal. Nothing. While that might sound like a dealbreaker, Starlink has completely changed what’s possible for remote properties like ours.

🛰️ We currently use two Starlink Gen 4 systems along with two Starlink Mini units (meant for our vehicles but they will do until the extender arrives) to provide internet coverage across the ranch.

📱 Combined with Wi-Fi calling, we’re able to make and receive phone calls, send text messages, answer emails, communicate with our Misfit families, update social media, run our boarding and training business (we’ll share more info about that soon!) and handle all of the day-to-day operations needed to keep things running smoothly.

🛜 Internet access is also one of the most important safety tools we have on the property. It allows us to remotely monitor systems throughout the Ranch, including the temperatures inside our kennel buildings to ensure our dogs remain safe and comfortable.

🏜️ We’ll be doing a separate post soon showing exactly how we monitor kennel temperatures, what equipment we use, and why it’s such an important part of operating in the desert.

🤦🏻‍♀️ We are still getting our lives together here at the ranch so the equipment hasn’t been mounted on the buildings properly yet but it will be soon and when it’s done, we’ll share how we did it.

🙌🏼 Some of the Misfits who are with us for a while get off leash training. We always work to establish excellent recall, a strong relationship and obedience before ever considering taking a dog off leash.

🚨 We also use as an emergency backup.

🏜️ Themba is one of the Misfits who is off leash around the property. Unfortunately, his collar was charging this morning. He’ll take an adventure anyway he can get it, so leashed it is!

🐶 Some of the other Misfits, you may see in photos and videos off leash around the property are Daisy Mae, Nina Marie, Riot, Enzo, Hansel and Gretel.

👏🏼 A few of our original sanctuary Misfits are with us here on property and off leash, along with our personal dogs as well. We’ve already introduced Apex but we’ll introduce Gypsy and Thanos soon.

🐕 You’ll see three of our personal dogs on occasion in photos and videos with the Misfits. All three were trained off leash at a very young age. We’ve been asked about our personal dogs quite a few times so we’ll introduce Zuri, Berlin and Omen soon as well.

⭐️ This post is meant to share the training we provide and the freedom it allows the Misfits on our private property. It also showcases that we still leash highly trained dogs when we don’t have an emergency backup collar in place.

🤔 Please keep in mind that while we believe in the power of excellent recall and off leash training, dogs should be kept on leash when in public for their safety and the safety of others. Of the many dogs we’ve encountered in public who were “off leash trained” over the years, we can count on one hand how many actually had the proper training with reliable recall. It’s the law. Please leash your dogs.
