Fun fact: I’m actually allergic to dogs 🤦🏻♀️
It’s something I’ve known for most of my life—and while my symptoms can be uncomfortable at times, my love for dogs has always outweighed it.
Over the years, I’ve learned how to manage it while caring for multiple dogs every single day. That looks like air purifiers, regular grooming, daily cleaning, being mindful of the dog’s diets to help reduce dander, allergy meds when needed… and yes, washing my face and arms multiple times a day because certain breeds give me hives (looking at you, bully breeds 🥰).
I share this because we receive messages every week from people who feel they need to surrender their dog after discovering allergy symptoms. And while we absolutely understand that allergies can be frustrating, they don’t always have to mean the end of the relationship with your dog.
Something else that my immunologist shared with me recently is that only 10% of the world‘s population is actually allergic to dogs and less than half of those people actually have any noticeable allergy symptoms. He’s found that many people who believe they’re allergic to dogs… actually aren’t allergic to the dog itself. Sometimes it’s environmental factors like dust, hair buildup, or even products being used on or around the dog. I’m just one of the lucky ones I guess 🤷🏻♀️
Of course, there are rare cases where someone has severe, life-threatening reactions—and for those individuals, we truly empathize. But those situations are not what people are messaging us for.
At the end of the day, adding a dog to your family should come with the understanding that challenges may come up—and working through those challenges is part of the commitment we make to them.
If you ever find yourself struggling with allergy symptoms, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to share what’s worked for us 🤍
And just to clear up any confusion—when I say I’m allergic to dogs, I’m talking about me, Mrs. Parker 💁🏻♀️ I’m the one currently nursing a broken leg, always behind the camera, running socials, and wearing about 100 different hats around here 😉
