This month’s volunteer spotlight shines on Andrea V.! ✨

Andrea serves on our board as the Bird Friendly Community Committee Chair, spreading the word on how to make our neighborhoods bird-safe. (Give her a shout if you want to know more!)

She's been with Red Rock Audubon for several years, and here's why she volunteers and joined our board: "I originally joined Red Rock Audubon as an AmeriCorps Service Member. As someone new to Vegas, it was a great way to get to know the local birds and community. Once my term finished, I wanted to join the board so I could continue engaging with the community and help folks feel more connected with birds."

Thank you for all your hard work! 💕

Please join our community partners and us this Saturday in Red Rock Canyon for World Migratory Bird Day! Find us at the Visitors Center and select trailheads.

World Migratory Bird Day is a biannual event that brings people together to celebrate the amazing migratory feats of our avian inhabitants. This event aims to raise awareness of the extent of migration and to emphasize the need for international cooperation in bird conservation. This year, there will be special emphasis on community science and how every observation helps to inform conservation efforts. 🐤

Bats comprise roughly one fourth of all biodiversity on earth. They share the skies with birds migrating at night and dine on insects, scorpions, other bats, and much more. Come to Cardy Lamb Pool at Warm Springs Natural Area for a one-night-only event to learn about Nevada’s bats from biologists and bat ambassadors. Masks are required, red light headlights are suggested. We will have mist netting demonstrations to reduce long walks in the dark.

Spot a flash of yellow near a wetland? Hearing a "witchety-witchety-witchety," "chuck" or aggressive chattering? That might be a Common Yellowthroat!

These little ones (Geothlypis trichas) are all across North America, including the Las Vegas Valley in spring. Males can easily be spotted by their black mask, while females are more subtle.

Fun fact from Cornell: The Common Yellowthroat was among the first New World bird species to be cataloged, when a Maryland specimen was described by Linnaeus in 1766.

Have you seen or heard any Yellowthroats this spring? 🐤

Been to a local park lately? They’re all full of babies! caught this scene at Cornerstone Park today. So precious. 🥹

Remember to please leash your dogs (it’s the law!) in our parks and don’t harass the wildlife. Let them be and observe from a safe distance (or politely let them cross your path). 💕
