HFSN Wine Tasting - Honored Guest Salute

For Howard William Ward, service to country is part of a family legacy that spans generations and some of the most consequential chapters in American military history.

That legacy began with Howard's father, a Corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, who served as a loadmaster at the Oakland Army Terminal. At the same time, Howard's cousin Hazel was making history of her own as a member of the groundbreaking 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion of the US Women's Army Corps unit that served overseas during WWII. The call to serve continued among Howard's brothers. His oldest brother joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War, another brother also enlisted in the Army, and another followed a path into the U.S. Air Force. Military service wasn't simply part of Howard's family history; it was a tradition he grew up witnessing firsthand.

In 1963, it was Howard's turn to carry that legacy forward.

Howard joined the U.S. Air Force, serving through 1967 during the Vietnam War. As a jet machinist with the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, 90th Fighter Squadron, his service took him from the United States to Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam. His expertise in aircraft maintenance helped keep critical aircraft mission-ready, while his leadership distinguished him as a Squadron leader during a transformative period in both our military and our nation.

The experiences of Vietnam, the friendships forged there, and the realities of war remained with Howard long after he returned home. Today, his commitment to service includes preserving the history of those who came before him. He is actively working to ensure a memorial is created in honor of his cousin Hazel and her extraordinary WWII service with the 6888th.

We are deeply honored to welcome Veteran Ward as one of our Honored Guests. As we commemorate America's 250th anniversary, the Ward family's story offers a powerful reminder that our nation's history has been shaped not only by individual acts of service, but by families who answered the call generation after generation. As well as by those, like Howard, who continue working to ensure their stories are never forgotten.

HFSN Wine Tasting - Honored Guest Salute
At just 17 years old, Delbert “Ray” Houlette enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on November 17, 1949. Less than a year later, he was headed to war.

Following boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Veteran Houlette was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 11th Marine Artillery Regiment, 1st Marine Division, where he trained in electronic communications as a radio operator and telephone lineman. On June 27, 1950, just days after the Korean War began, his unit received orders to prepare for combat. On July 12, he and his fellow Marines sailed from California for South Korea as part of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade.

What followed would become part of Marine Corps history. Veteran Houlette served in combat as a radioman and survived the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, one of the most harrowing campaigns of the Korean War. In brutal winter conditions and surrounded by enemy forces, he and his fellow Marines endured extraordinary hardship as they fought their way out of the Chosin Reservoir region.

He went on to serve 18 years in the Marine Corps, from 1949 to 1967, ultimately attaining the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (E-7). His service included Korea and Okinawa, and he is a recipient of the Ambassador for Peace Medal, recognizing Korean War Veterans for their service and sacrifice.

We are deeply honored to welcome Gunnery Sergeant Delbert “Ray” Houlette, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired, as one of our Honored Guests. As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, Ray's story reminds us that behind the history we read about are the men and women who actually lived it. HFSN Wine Tasting - Honored Guest Salute

Msgt Philip Krieger, U.S. Air Force, Retired, dedicated 23 years to military service and has spent more than a decade continuing that commitment through Honor Flight Southern Nevada.

Phil's aviation career began shortly after high school, when he earned his pilot's license while studying aeronautics and electronics. He enlisted in the California Air National Guard, serving as a flight simulator technician before earning his Air Force C-130 Flight Engineer rating. His career would take him around the world aboard the C-130 and later the KC-10 with the Air Force Reserve. After retiring from military service in 1990, Phil continued his aviation career internationally, including six years in Japan as a flight engineer with Japan Air Lines.

In 2013, Phil helped establish Honor Flight Southern Nevada as one of its founding members, beginning a new chapter of service that continues today. More than a decade later, he remains an active member of the Board of Directors and a familiar presence at Honor Flight events, helping ensure Southern Nevada Veterans receive the recognition and experience they have earned.

As we honor 250 years of American service and sacrifice, we are especially proud to recognize Phil as one of our Honored Guests, a Veteran who served his country in uniform and continues to serve his fellow Veterans today. Thank you, Phil, for the many ways your support Honor Flight.

Honored Guests Salute

After 26 years of service in the US Army SFC Elizabeth (Beth) Bennett, US Army, Retired, continues to live a life centered on service to her country, fellow Veterans, and her community.

Her military career took her from tactical communications in Germany to liaison duties at the U.S. Embassy in Qatar and federal military liaison work in emergency management. Following her Army retirement, she continued supporting our Armed Forces as a defense contractor and today works as an IT configuration analyst supporting U.S. Navy training ranges, including those used for TOPGUN training.

Beth's commitment to service extends well beyond her military career. She served as a Guardian for Honor Flight Southern Nevada and continues to share her experience as a trusted ambassador, a peer support group leader with Merging Vets and Players Las Vegas, and Junior Vice Commander of VFW Post 12198.

We are proud to welcome Beth as one of our Honored Guests and recognize not only her 26 years in uniform, but the many ways she continues to serve our nation's military and Veteran communities. What a special evening it is going to be!

Technical Sergeant Hunter Haats, U.S. Air Force, continues to shape the next generation of America's warfighters through his leadership as an instructor and mission planner in the MQ-9 community, carrying forward a legacy of service to our nation.

A highly respected Weapons School instructor, TSgt Haats has trained dozens of future Weapons Officers, led major training initiatives across multiple squadrons, and helped integrate advanced combat capabilities that strengthen Air Force readiness. He was also awarded the Air Combat Command Flying Instructor of the Year, recognizing his exceptional skill, leadership, and impact as an educator in the aviation community. His expertise has directly influenced mission planning, operational innovation, and the preparation of combat units for deployment.

Known for his exceptional leadership, dedication to excellence, and commitment to those he mentors, TSgt Haats represents the professionalism, innovation, and enduring spirit of service that continue to define the United States Air Force as it honors its past and prepares for the future.
