We put the same twelve questions to all ten states with established Gray Wolf populations, scored against their own published documents. This is every grade in every category, side by side.

The same split shows up down the board. The four lowest-scoring states all do better on transparency than on humane and ethical treatment. They may tell us what they are doing, but that doesn’t excuse the policies.

Science is the weakest column of the three: six of the ten scored C− or lower, and no state beat an A−.

Idaho, Montana and Wyoming — the three that already write their own rules for "managing" wolves — are the three lowest.

🎉🥳 WE DID IT 💜🐺 COEXISTENCE IS NOW LAW IN CALIFORNIA!!! Governor Newsom has officially signed SB 1135 (the California Wildlife Coexistence Act) into law.

This victory belongs to an incredible coalition. We are deeply grateful to Defenders of Wildlife and National Wildlife Federation for sponsoring and leading this legislation, Senator Catherine Blakespear Senator Catherine S. Blakespear for authoring and championing the bill, Jennifer Fearing for her tireless advocacy, and Beth Pratt for fighting every step of the way. 💜

And to YOU, our WFW pack. You sent more than 3,000 letters in support of SB 1135. You showed up, shared, called, commented and kept the pressure on. 😍☺️🙌💜🐺

Our team has worked alongside this coalition throughout the legislative process: submitting public comments, attending and speaking at several hearings, mobilizing our community and advocating again and again for a future where coexistence comes before killing.

SB 1135 establishes a statewide Wildlife Coexistence Program, advancing proactive, science-based and nonlethal approaches to reducing conflict between people and wildlife, including wolves, bears and mountain lions. 🐺🐻🦁

YOUR VOICE MATTERS. Thank you to every organization, advocate, legislator and one of YOU who helped push this across the finish line. 💜

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: GOVERNOR NEWSOM HAS SIGNED THE WILDLIFE COEXISTENCE ACT 🚨

Today is a victory for California’s wolves—and for wildlife across the state.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed SB 1135, the California Wildlife Coexistence Act, re-establishing a statewide program built around proactive, nonlethal strategies to prevent conflict and help people and animals live safely together.

The new law also codifies California’s wolf-livestock coexistence and compensation program. With $5 million secured in the state budget, California now has the tools to invest in coexistence before conflict turns deadly.

Thank you to everyone who called, spoke up, and demanded a better way forward—and to Governor Gavin Newsom for signing the bill into law!

California chose coexistence. Now we make it work.

It's not enough to love animals; we must actively protect and preserve them. It's our duty and responsibility as custodians of this planet..

1273M IS DEAD. KILLED AFTER CROSSING BEYOND YELLOWSTONE’S PROTECTION. 💔🐺

When 1273M was young, he became so curious about people that he once ran off with a photographer’s tripod. Biologists worked to teach him to keep his distance from humans; and it worked. He grew into a naturally behaving wild wolf and became part of Yellowstone’s Rescue Creek Pack. 💜🐺

And now he’s dead. 💔💔💔

On September 25, it was reported that 1273M had been killed during the wolf hunt in Montana subunit 313.

It’s hard to wrap your head around. Yellowstone wolves are wild animals, but some grow up seeing people constantly and don’t understand that crossing an invisible boundary can take them from the protection of a national park into a place where they can be hunted. 💔
And somehow, in 2026, people are still killing wolves for recreation. It’s disgusting and barbaric. We cannot become numb to this. We have to be LOUD.

Rest in peace, 1273M. You deserved better. 💔
