22,200 domestic violence cases were reported in Clark County in 2024.

That isn’t a national statistic. That’s right here at home.

Behind those cases are people in our community — our neighbors, coworkers, friends and families. At The Shade Tree, we provide a safe place for survivors and their children to take the next step toward safety, stability and a life beyond abuse.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re not just raising awareness. We’re showing what support looks like — right here in Southern Nevada. 💜

If you or someone you know needs a safe place, The Shade Tree’s 24/7 hotline is 855.385.0072.

Today, The Shade Tree joins our community in honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

We recognize the rich histories, enduring cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, especially the Southern Paiute people whose ancestral homelands include the Las Vegas Valley.

At The Shade Tree, we believe that everyone deserves safety, dignity, respect, and the opportunity to build a brighter future.

Today, we honor the strength of Indigenous communities, celebrate their continuing traditions, and reaffirm our commitment to a community where every person feels valued and supported.

Yesterday, The Shade Tree’s CEO Linda Perez spoke with News 3 about something our community urgently needs: a safe place for survivors of domestic violence to go.

After nearly two years of repairs and renovations, The Shade Tree now has capacity for 250 beds — the most of any shelter of its kind in Nevada.

And those beds matter.

And those beds matter.

Nearly 4,000 people across Nevada requested a shelter bed last year and could not receive one. Here at home, domestic violence has already claimed 33 lives in Clark County through August of this year.

But as Linda told News 3:

“It’s not about just filling the beds. It’s about making sure that we have the right staff and the right partners to help us with resources.”

Because a bed is only the beginning.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re grateful to have our shelter fully open again — and grateful to every donor, volunteer, partner and supporter who helps us make sure there is more than a bed waiting when someone arrives at our door.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜 This month is an opportunity to shine a brighter light on the realities of domestic violence. It's a time to recognize the importance of access to safe spaces and trusted resources.

At The Shade Tree, we're committed to providing safety and support to individuals and families as they navigate their next steps and work toward a future where they can feel secure, supported, and empowered.

Behind every number is a child, a family, and a story that deserves to be heard. Each year, an estimated 3.3 to 10 million children are exposed to adult domestic violence, an experience that can have lasting effects on their lives.

Childhood trauma can affect a child's sense of safety, relationships, and well-being long after the violence ends. Raising awareness about domestic violence and childhood trauma means listening to children, recognizing the signs, and creating safe spaces where they feel seen and supported.

When we educate our communities and speak up, we give children the opportunity to heal and thrive. ✨

Generational trauma is the emotional and behavioral patterns that can be passed down from one generation to the next, shaping how we communicate, cope, and build relationships with others and ourselves. But the patterns we inherit don't have to be the patterns we continue. ✨

Breaking the cycle can start with:
🩷 Setting healthy boundaries
🩷 Learning to communicate openly
🩷 Practicing self-compassion
🩷 Reaching out for support

Healing can only begin with awareness, and small changes today can create a different path for the generations to come.
