Join us for Advisors & Atmospheres: Keeping Identities and Acceptance Safer for After-School Clubs, a workshop designed for afterschool club advisors, GSA leaders, and educators.

Together, we’ll explore practical tools and resources for creating more welcoming, inclusive spaces for students of diverse identities and backgrounds. Following the workshop, attendees will also receive a guided tour of The Center and learn more about the resources available to support young people in our community.

Alice Wong (born 1974) is a Chinese American disability activist and mediamaker. Wong challenges ableism and broadens the participation and visibility of disabled people through her social media, editorials, books, podcasts, and online communities. In 2014, Wong began recording the oral histories of “everyday” disabled people through the StoryCorps project. These stories became part of the Disability Visibility Project (DVP), an online platform Wong founded and directs.

DVP has assembled over 140 oral histories with an emphasis on the contributions of disabled people of color and q***r disabled people.

From Hidden Voices: Americans with
Disabilities in United States History

The Hidden Voices project was initiated in 2018 by the Department of Social Studies. The resources developed as part of the Hidden Voices project are the product of collaborative efforts between the NYCDOE, multiple educational and cultural institutions, artists, and scholars. The project helps students learn about the innumerable people, often “hidden” from the traditional historical record, who have shaped and continue to shape our history and identity. Hidden Voices allows students to find their own voice as they become analysts of the past and make connections between the past and the present.

Each resource guide supplements and is aligned to the Passport to Social Studies curriculum and establishes the historical context essential for teachers of all content areas to facilitate inclusive learning experiences for all students. Hidden Voices encourages educators to honor the complexity of culture, develop respect for differences, teach from multiple perspectives, and ensure that instructional materials reflect a wide variety of racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Southern Nevada educators and advisors of student-led clubs and spaces are invited to join us for Advisors & Atmospheres!

This practical workshop will provide guidance, useful resources, and ideas to help you become a more informed, prepared, inclusive, and affirming advisor. It is open to current and future advisors of GSAs and other student-led clubs and spaces who want to better support LGBTQ+ students.

The workshop will be followed by a guided tour of The LGBTQ+ Center of Southern Nevada and its resources.

Lunch will be provided, along with gift bags and opportunities to win generous gift-card giveaways!
