Yesterday, 8 youth earned their food safety certification, opening the door to job opportunities in the food service industry.
In almost three years of Share in the JOY, this may be one of our most significant milestones.
Last August, as we prepared to launch Share in the JOY Day at Child Haven, we were told one of the biggest barriers preventing youth in foster care from getting jobs was obtaining a Food Handler card.
So we asked for testing to be brought onsite to the kids. The answer was no. It’s not something that’s done.
But we were told what could be done was create our own Food Handler training program, submit it for approval through the Southern Nevada Health District, and if approved, conduct our own onsite certification training.
More than 8 months later, just two weeks ago, SNHD officially approved our trauma-informed Share in the JOY Food Handler Certification Program.
And yesterday, eight youth took our inaugural class. All eight passed with scores of 92% or higher.
This program was intentionally built specifically for youth in foster care.
It uses repetition to improve retention. Group study to reduce testing anxiety. Short animated training modules featuring our mascot JOY to create familiarity and comfort. Twenty videos, none longer than 90 seconds, designed for attention span and engagement. A glossary of more than two dozen industry words explained in language these youth can actually understand and retain.
This program does not lower the standard, it just changes the way the material is taught so the kids can meet the standard.
And creating this program was never “just” about a Food Handler card. It was about removing a barrier and building confidence. Creating access and showing these youth that being in the foster care system does not get to define what they are capable of.
Yesterday, 8 youth earned their food safety certification. They just happen to be in foster care.
