The book "Desert Friends" was published in the 1930's at the Stewart Indian School. The book chronicles the adventures of 2 young Numu (Northern Paiute) kids as they learn the traditional names and uses of plants on the landscape. A progressive work for the time to try to conserve language and traditional use of plants. The few remaining copies here in the Stewart archives were suffering as old photocopied prints do. Fortunately our friends at the Nevada Museum of Art saw the importance of this book and painstakingly digitized it and were able to recently do a republication with a new frontispiece! You can get your copy at the Nevada Museum of Art Bookstore or on their website. You can also get copies here at the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum Gift Shop. Speaking of, if you like books don't forget to join us this Thursday April 23rd at 3:00pm for a special reading and book signing by Lorraine Martinez-Cook of her book "Autumn's Grace."
There is no cost to visit the Museum, Gift Shop, or to attend the Book Signing. The Museum and Gift Shop are open Monday-Friday 10am to 5pm.
