Black women educators’ political clarity- that is, the legacy of Black women educators' pedagogies, understands that schools are projects of anti-Black racism wrapped together with classism, sexism, and white supremacist capitalist logic. Our political clarity as praxis shifts Black children from "problems" to beings worthy of love, protection, and always educable. Black women educators political clarity reflects the notion that teaching and learning can never be culturally or politically neutral.

While often forgotten in mainstream Civil Rights narratives, Black educators were on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Their classrooms were sites of high expectations, truth-telling, and preparation for freedom. Outside of their classrooms, Black teachers organized secretly through organizations like the Georgia Teachers and Education Association, led by Horace Tate and took enormous personal and professional risks to advocate for the desegregation of schools so their students would have access to resources and opportunities. Ironically, we are still doing that same work.
