🚒❄️ COLD WEATHER & HOME FIRE SAFETY ❄️🔥
Gallinas Volunteer Fire Department

Freezing weather is coming—prepare now to protect your family and home:

🔥 Prevent Fires
• Inspect and clean chimneys, fireplaces, and wood stoves professionally.
• Never burn trash, cardboard, or treated wood.
• Keep anything flammable at least 3 feet from heating equipment.
• Never leave fires unattended. Place ashes in a covered metal container outdoors, away from buildings—ashes can stay hot for days.

🏠 Use Heaters Safely
• Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets—never extension cords or power strips.
• Turn heaters off when sleeping or leaving home.
• Never heat your home with an oven, grill, or outdoor cooking equipment.
• Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors regularly.
• Have heating systems inspected by qualified professionals.

🥶 Prepare for Freezing Weather
• Insulate exposed pipes and disconnect garden hoses.
• Bring pets indoors or provide warm shelter.
• Check on vulnerable neighbors and keep emergency supplies, blankets, flashlights, and batteries ready.

🚨 In a Chimney or House Fire
Evacuate immediately. Call 911 and give your exact location. Never reenter or try to extinguish a chimney fire yourself. Stay outside at a safe distance until responders arrive.

Stay warm. Stay prepared. Stay safe! ❤️

FLASH FLOOD POTENTIAL THIS WEEK

The National Weather Service is forecasting a significant increase in moisture across New Mexico this week, with widespread heavy rainfall and an increased potential for flash flooding, particularly Tuesday through Thursday.

Residents should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially in areas near arroyos, creeks, low-water crossings, steep terrain, and areas affected by recent wildfires.
