Nuestra Tierra is proud to be a part of the Coalition for Outdoor Equity Fund NM, a statewide alliance working to secure sustainable public funding for our state’s Outdoor Equity Fund. Together, we’re ensuring every young New Mexican can access meaningful outdoor experiences — today and for generations to come.

We believe outdoor access creates opportunity and is a basic right, not a privilege. The Outdoor Equity Fund helps remove barriers so more youth can experience the outdoors. Since 2019, the Outdoor Equity Fund has connected over 100,000 New Mexico youth to the outdoors —many for the very first time. But demand continues to outpace funding. A thriving Outdoor Equity Fund means healthier youth, stronger communities, and pathways to future careers in conservation and outdoor recreation.

The Coalition for Outdoor Equity Fund NM is working to make these values a reality across our state. Learn more about NMOEF here: nmoutside.com/grants/outdoor-equity-fund

Today is World Clean Energy Day, but what does that mean, really? 🧐
Clean energy refers to power sources, like solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal, that do not emit greenhouse gases during their production, use, and disposal stages.

Why is this important?
Although “clean” ≠ perfect, keeping carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere helps to fight climate change through low-carbon or carbon-free energy production.

At the heart of it all, this isn’t about technology but people. This April, New Mexico will become the first state in the Southwest to launch a Clean Transportation Fuel Program, aiming to cut transportation emissions by 20% by 2030. This means that 50% of revenues will directly benefit low-income and underserved New Mexicans, the same frontline communities that are often impacted by industrial or environmental factors.

True progress is making sure that those most affected by energy decisions are the ones leading the discussions. Nuestra Tierra is committed to ensuring that our history, values, and people are authentically reflected in public land and water management decisions - today and every day.

In the latest “Make It Make Sense!” news, the Environmental Policy Agency (EPA) has stopped assigning dollar values to lives saved and the health problems avoided through many of its environmental regulations on fine particles and ozone pollution. This is a significant rollback from decades of established policy.

Fine particles, known as PM2.5, come from a variety of sources, including power plants that burn fossil fuels like coal and gas. Long-term exposure is known to cause asthma, heart attacks, dementia, and even premature death. It is estimated that over 230,000 lives per year were saved thanks to previous EPA regulations.

Since 1981, an executive order from President Ronald Reagan mandated that the EPA weigh costs against benefits for major regulations. The data consistently showed the Clean Air Act paying for itself 20 times over, which meant small decreases in air pollution translated to huge savings when multiplied across the entire population.

By removing dollar values from health benefits while keeping industry cost calculations, the scales tip in favor of polluters, creating “justification” for doing away with pollution protections that save lives!

Why are we moving backwards in 2026? Make👏 it👏 make👏 sense👏!

Thanks again to Grizz and the team at KISS El Paso for having us back on the air this morning. It’s always a good time catching up and getting folks excited about getting outdoors.

In the words of our Àngel Peña, Executive Director, “having fun and going outside doesn’t need to be climbing to the top of the peak. Being a recreationist doesn’t mean you have to be able to pitch a tent in under a minute; it can be a carne asada… it can be floating the river, it can be waking up [from camping] with drink cans all around you. That's the beauty of it! That the outside speaks to us in all different ways, and it really doesn’t matter as long as you’re out there having fun.”

The year just started, and we’ve had enough! ❌
On January 6, the federal government (Bureau of Land Management) leased over 20,000 acres of OUR PUBLIC LANDS in New Mexico to oil and gas companies, costing us $110 million in lost revenue because of outdated rates that prioritize industry profits.

That’s $110 million that should have gone to our schools, hospitals, and public institutions, yet New Mexico’s frontline communities continue to get shortchanged.

Ya basta! New Mexicans deserve better! Public land management needs to include prioritizing and protecting our collective lands and landscapes, not just industry profits.

Today is the LAST DAY to make a tax-deductible contribution for 2025, but more importantly, it’s the last day of a year where our communities show extraordinary resilience and courage.

We’re in a critical moment where both conservation and our communities are under attack by an administration that doesn’t see us as part of the American story. Some donors have pulled back.

But Nuestra Tierra has been preparing for this. Our operations are solid. Our team is steady. Our communities know exactly what’s at stake. We’re not retreating, apologizing, or shrinking. Forward is our battle cry.

Forward means:
+ People-powered conservation at La Mancha Wetlands
+ Securing sustainable outdoor equity in New Mexico
+ Leading the movement for federal outdoor opportunities across the nation

If you believe in that future, please consider making your final gift of the year before midnight. ⏰

Thank you for building Nuestro Futuro with us. 🙏

There is no future without nature, and today, the future of public lands — our wildlife, water, and way of life — is under threat like never before.

We are grateful for your past generous support, which has helped secure major victories for these issues across the country. But the work is far from over, and it has never been more urgent!

While government shutdowns silently fast-track extraction permits and national monuments face unprecedented attacks, we’re fighting back because we refuse to let that happen.

The Conservation Lands Foundation and our powerful network of 84 community-based organizations are taking bold, coordinated action to defend the places we love. Together, we are mobilizing communities, advancing legal challenges, driving public pressure, and harnessing the power of local leadership to ensure that public lands remain healthy, intact, and accessible, now and for generations to come.

Your year-end gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, going twice as far to:
+ Defend environmental protections
+ Empower grassroots organizations to continue the fight in their communities
+ Protect wildlife habitats and cultural sites
+ Keep public lands accessible for all
+ Nature can’t wait, and neither can we.

“La Mancha Wetlands is a much-needed amenity to the wildlife and river ecosystem, as well as the nearby residents. It benefits both the environment and the community. This place just needs people who love it.”

When the Southwest Environmental Center entrusted us with La Mancha in 2022 and again when Randy McMillan later donated an additional acre, agreeing to a conservation easement along the trail, they gave us far more than just a plot of land. They passed on an opportunity to steward a beloved place for our entire community.

Today, love for La Mancha shows up in different ways. It shows up in local artists setting up their easels along the trail, painting La Mancha’s cattails and sunrise colors, in New Mexico State University students who come here to map bird habitats, test water quality, and use La Mancha as a living tool for their environmental studies, and in the growing number of weekly volunteers pruning saltcedar, carrying wheelbarrows piled high with tumbleweed, and clearing paths for the community to enjoy.

Through the awesome power of our community, La Mancha Wetlands has expanded from 2.99 to 4.52 acres. Pretty impressive for what used to be a concrete dumpsite for Dona Ana County.

La Mancha thrives because people like you believe that beloved places can hold big futures. Together, we can keep this wetland (and so many more) healthy and full of memories for generations to come!

Now through December 31st, your support will be matched dollar for dollar courtesy of our friends at Flickr.

Will you help us continue to protect and restore essential outdoor spaces like La Mancha Wetlands?

Three students, one scholarship, and a lasting legacy of conservation stewardship.

The David Soules Conservation Memorial Scholarship supports current New Mexico State University (NMSU) students pursuing a conservation-related field of study, building the knowledge our communities will rely on to navigate drought, biodiversity loss, wildfire, and the profound ecological changes ahead.

Conservation is the bridge between tradition and tomorrow. When we invest in youth who will protect these places long after we’re gone, we honor those who protected them before us.

This year, Flickr is matching your contribution dollar-for-dollar to double your impact. Will you join us in supporting the next generation of land stewards who will keep New Mexico thriving?

12/16/2025

We believe conservation should not be dictated from faraway boardrooms in D.C.; conservation should be built by the people who have the most to lose and the most to gain. That's why in 2021, Nuestra Tierra co-created the Outdoor Opportunity Coalition (OOC, formerly known as the Outdoor F.U.T.U.R.E. Initiative): to establish a federal outdoor opportunity fund, expanding youth access to the outdoors across the nation. To date, 100 organizations and community partners have signed on in support of this initiative.

Coalition-building isn’t glamorous. It’s late-night emails, drafting multilingual toolkits, and honest conversations when the path forward disappears.

But it’s also moments of joy in youth paddling for the first time, in building essential equitable access in wildfire-prone communities, and kids who never thought the outdoors was “for them”, realizing it IS!

These stories shape policy. While we continue building support for the legislation, 32 states are considering more than 170 bills related to outdoor access and equity, with OOC serving as a trusted resource for states building their own models.

When youth get outside → they fall in love with the outdoors → they protect the outdoors. Coalitions like OOC are what make that possible.

Give Today: tinyurl.com/EOYGiving2025
P.S. Flickr's match amplifies every dollar, allowing us to bring more youth voices, partners, and states into this movement.
