On Monday May 11, 2026, The Last Shift Nurse Honor Guard of South Texas honored the life and legacy of José Castulo "Chepo" Segura, a devoted Registered Nurse who served the nursing profession with compassion, skill, and unwavering dedication.
Before embarking on his life’s calling as a nurse, Mr. Nurse Segura proudly served our nation in the United States Army Reserve as a member of a tanker unit. His discipline, courage, and commitment to service were evident even then; qualities he carried with him throughout his entire nursing career.
Nurse Segura completed his nursing education at Laredo Junior College, where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of service in healthcare. As part of his training, he completed his clinical rotations at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, gaining valuable hands-on experience that helped shape his skills and compassion for patient care. He earned his RN license on May 10, 1973, marking the beginning of a remarkable 46-year career dedicated to healing, compassion, and excellence.
During those 46 years, he touched countless lives through his work in prep & hold, ambulatory care, home health, and long-term care. His hands were steady, his presence reassuring, and his commitment to excellence unmistakable.
Throughout his distinguished career, he served in several healthcare settings, including: Laredo Mercy Hospital, Laredo Medical Center, St. Jude Home Health, Retama Nursing & Rehabilitation, and his early work as the first surgical tech under Dr. Leo Cigarroa.
In each of these places, he was known not only for his clinical expertise but also for his kindness, mentorship, and deep empathy for patients and families.
After decades of dedicated service, Nurse José retired as a Registered Nurse on May 10, 2009, concluding his career in the areas he loved most: Prep & Hold / Ambulatory Care, St. Jude Home Health, and Retama Nursing & Rehabilitation. Even in his final years of practice, he continued to offer steady hands, a calm presence, and a heart devoted to caring for others. He left behind a legacy that continues to inspire those who had the privilege of working beside him.
José is not remembered by the number of his years, but by the difference he made during those years and in the lives he touched.
On behalf of your fellow nurses, we thank you for your service, your compassion, and your dedication to the noble profession of nursing. You are now relieved of your earthly duties and we will take it from here.
Special thank you to Fred Dickey Funeral and Cremations Services Funeral Director and the Segura family for allowing us to honor José Castulo "Chepo" Segura.
Thank you to our Last Shift Nurse Honor Guard members who attended the ceremony: Rosalinda Montemayor , Jose L. Manrique, Jackie Gutierrez (De Anda), Ernesto Garcia , Angelica Tobias , and Virginia Goldsmith.
