5.3 million Texans live within half a mile of an active oil or gas well. Now, the EPA is proposing to weaken methane pollution protections. The rules address major leaks, wasted natural gas, and pollution from oil and gas operations.

The Texas Methane Network is asking the EPA to keep the 2024 Methane Rule in place and urging Texas regulators to adopt a strong implementation plan.

SB 1150, signed into law in 2025, takes a step in the right direction towards addressing the number of inactive oil wells in Texas. But it still contains loopholes for oil and gas companies. The RRC, our state oil and gas agency, just opened the public comment period, during which you can submit suggestions to eliminate these loopholes and protect the health and safety of our communities.
