It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that we said goodbye to everyone's best friend at W.O.L.F. Sanctuary, Pax, on Monday, May 4, 2026.
From Shelley Coldiron, PhD, Executive Director:
Pax’s story begins with Sasha, who came to W.O.L.F. in July 2010. She was placed with an older boy, Webster, but Sasha was a strong-spirited girl and was not kind to sweet Webster.
During that time, there were two puppies in the rescue network. Staff put Pax’s name and the other puppy’s name on 2 separate pieces of paper, then asked Sasha to choose. She grabbed the paper with Pax’s name and ran up the habitat with it. So, she picked her boy, Pax. Sasha was a tough-love kind of “mom” to Pax, who was full of puppy energy, and sometimes she grew tired of him and snarled at him to leave her alone. But other times, they were seen playing together and were a wonderful pair to serve as ambassadors. But when Sasha would get frustrated with Pax, I would tell her, “Remember, you picked him!”
When Pax was about 4 years old, and Sasha was not tolerating his antics, she snarled at him, and he decided he was grown enough to retaliate. He wasn’t a puppy anymore! We tried trial separations, but when they got back together, there was no reconciliation.
We tried pairing Pax with several girls, but he did not tolerate anyone getting in front of him for attention or interacting with “his” people. Finally, we put Ariel and Pax together. This worked only because Ariel was so shy with people that there was not even a hint of competition for attention.
When Ariel passed, Pax became the greeter at the cabin in Rist Canyon, and when we moved to Red Feather Lakes, he was promoted to full-time “Manager” at Headquarters. Pax loved greeting everyone, “Mister Social.” He loved his trips in the van and riding the UTV on his rounds around the Sanctuary. An UTV ride meant stopping to greet Nala. She was enchanted with Pax even though Nala’s brother, Akela, did not approve.
Headquarters at W.O.L.F. isn’t the same without Pax. We all miss our Paxster so much. His heart and presence were huge, and his departure is a void in our lives and in our hearts.
Miss you, Little Man.
