Lanoka Harbor and the Revolutionary War: "Battle of Cedar Creek Bridge" as told in Gustav Kobbé's 1889 book: "The New Jersey Coast and Pines: An Illustrated Guide-book (with Road-maps)". This is a wonderful little book references the Battle of Cedar Creek Bridge occurring in Cedar Creek, December 27, 1782, present day Lanoka Harbor. Gustav Kobbe was an avid sailor and made his career in literary and newspaper work, he was well know as a critic and contributed articles on musical and dramatic subjects to the leading magazines and periodicals. *A little known, fact about his death, was while he was sailing out in the Great South Bay off Bay Shore, New York, in July 1918, a seaplane, coming down for a landing, struck his boat and killed him instantly., he was 61 years old.

In doing research on Revolutionary War on events that happened in Lacey we uncovered more, rich, local history. Did you know that the Forked River Militia had a post at the mouth of Forked River? Captain Samuel Brown built and commanded a heavy gun boat that patrolled Barnegat Bay, she was called "Civil Usage” and was launched in the summer of 1777. She was armed with one long six pounder (canon), four swivels and two wall pieces and muskets for each of the crew, which consisted of thirty six to forty seven men. The duty assigned to "Civil Usage”, after she was armed, equipped and manned, was to guard Barnegat Bay and the Inlet, preventing aggressions of the enemy. Their duty being understood was to hold themselves continually in readiness to turn out at a moment’s warning to resist the depredations of the Tories and refugees in whatever place their services might be required.
