At Opportunities, Inc., self-advocacy is about more than speaking up. It’s about having the confidence to make choices, pursue your goals, understand your rights, and take an active role in your community.

Through our Self-Advocacy Groups, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are coming together to share experiences, build leadership skills, explore topics that affect their everyday lives, and discover new ways to make their voices heard.

And advocacy doesn’t stop at the meeting room. We’re working to create opportunities for participants to connect with community leaders, attend local advocacy events, share their experiences, and become even more involved in the decisions that shape their communities.

💙 Independence creates opportunities to give back.

Through Opportunities, Inc.'s Community Life Engagement programs, people are building confidence, strengthening their independence, and making a meaningful impact through volunteer service.

Recently, participants volunteered with I Support the Girls, helping support women and girls in our community.

When people have the skills and confidence to travel independently, they gain more than transportation. They gain the freedom to connect with their community, pursue their interests, and make a difference.

Our travel training program is made possible through a grant with Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

At Opportunities, Inc., our Route Ready Travel Training Program helps people build the skills and confidence to navigate public transportation independently—opening the door to work, recreation, friendships, and new experiences.

As we close out another fiscal year, we're reflecting on the people, partnerships, and opportunities that made this year so meaningful.

Over the past 12 months, we've:
💙 Supported 320 people
💙 Helped 54 people find meaningful employment
💙 Completed 153 Person-Centered Plans
💙 Provided 755 Route Ready travel training trips
💙 Partnered with 24 community organizations

And created countless opportunities for inclusion, independence, and community connection. Every number represents a person, a goal achieved, and a stronger community.

One Team. One Mission. 💙

At Opportunities, Inc., investing in our team means investing in the people and families we support.

Earlier this month, our staff came together for our annual All-Staff In-Service Day. This was a day dedicated to learning, collaboration, and strengthening the work we do every day.

Together, we celebrated accomplishments, explored our 2025–2030 Strategic Plan progress and what's ahead, launched our new employee Innovation Platform, and reinforced an important truth: every role contributes to creating meaningful, inclusive lives.

When we learn from one another, share new ideas, and work together, we're better equipped to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in achieving their goals and building connections in their communities.

🚍 Route Ready in Action!
Every trip starts with confidence.

We’re excited to share our new Route Ready video, highlighting how our travel training program helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities build the skills to travel safely, confidently, and independently using public transportation.

Thanks to funding from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG), Route Ready has already provided 743 one-way travel training sessions, helping people access jobs, volunteer opportunities, community activities, and more.

Whether you're celebrating with family and friends, enjoying a community event, or watching fireworks, we hope your holiday is filled with joy, connection, and wonderful memories.

As you celebrate, here are a few simple tips to help everyone stay safe:
🎆 Keep a safe distance from fireworks and leave them to the professionals whenever possible.
💧 Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade if you're spending time outdoors.
🧴 Wear sunscreen and dress for the weather.
🎧 If fireworks or loud noises are overwhelming, consider using noise-reducing headphones or finding a quieter place to enjoy the festivities.
❤️ Stay together with your group and have a plan if you're attending a crowded event.

Stronger Together: Celebrating Our Community Partners 💙

A special shoutout to our Community Engagement Specialists and the incredible community partners who make meaningful community connections possible every day.

Through volunteer opportunities, recreational activities, educational experiences, and community events, our Community Engagement Specialists work tirelessly to build relationships that create inclusive and engaging experiences for the people we support.

To our community partners: thank you for being an essential part of this work. Your organizations do more than provide places to volunteer and participate—you help create opportunities for friendship, purpose, learning, and belonging. By welcoming us into your spaces, you help make meaningful community engagement a reality.

📢 Everyone deserves the opportunity to be heard, make choices, and advocate for what matters to them.

That's why Opportunities, Inc. launched two new self-advocacy groups this spring—to create dedicated spaces where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can build leadership skills, share their perspectives, and strengthen their voices in their communities.

The response has been incredible! In April, we successfully formed self-advocacy groups in both Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, with strong participation and enthusiasm from members.

Rather than having the groups designed for them, members took the lead in shaping their own identities. Each group developed its own name and mission, and elected a chairperson to serve a one-year term.

🎤 Say It Loud Crew: A Place for Powerful Hero Voices and Decision Makers (Montgomery County)

⭐ Self-Advocacy Superstars: Voices in Command (Prince George's County)

These groups meet monthly and are already creating opportunities for members to learn, lead, advocate, and support one another. We are proud of the leaders who stepped forward and excited to see the impact these groups will have in the months and years ahead.
