Our mission is to protect wild spaces and promote healthy ecosystems in and beyond Island County. To understand how a bird lives, look down and study its feet. They are, by turns, lethal, cute, feathery, scaly, aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, colorful, long, short, and always, always useful.

Join us for this three-part, online class with master birder Connie Sidles as she explores this aspect of bird life. You'll never look at birds the same way again!

Spring is upon us, which means it's time to get the binoculars out and peep the colors of the beautiful birds of Whidbey and Camano Islands. While birdwatching this season, please consider how you can speak up to protect our beloved avian friends.

According to Cornell Birds, we have lost 3 billion birds in North America since the 1970s. Whidbey Island is home to over 230 species of birds, many of which are at risk. Common birds—the species that many people see every day—have suffered the greatest losses, according to a study published in Science in 2019. More than 90% of the losses (more than 2.5 billion birds) come from just 12 families, including sparrows, blackbirds, warblers, and finches.

We need to protect our avian neighbors by implementing and enforcing local policies that protect their habitat and prepare for climate change.

Check out Whidbey Audubon Society's bird list on their website for a full list of birds identified through field study on Whidbey Island.
