Happy New Year from Gentle Acres! We have a new fundraiser going to cover feed, farriers, and vet bills coming up in the next couple of months. If you are able, please consider making a donation - even the smallest donations make an impact! Our goal for 2026 is to be able to take in more animals in need, but we can’t make that happen without your help. Link to fundraiser in our stories and bio. 🤎

Sweet Poppy is beating the heat in her wallow tub! When the temps climb up to triple digits, we make sure to leave the water on at a trickle so the tubs never dry out and there’s always cool water circulating. A bonus side effect is it also creates mud around the tub, which the pigs also enjoy!

Our sweetest boy Stewie isn’t eating, is lethargic, and is very congested. We are trying to find a vet who will come out to see him, but they are very expensive. Please consider donating to the Poppy & Stew sponsorship to help us cover the costs of his treatment. Poppy & Stew 2025 Sponsorship on Givebutter! https://givebutter.com/PefQZl

We’re preparing for this weekend’s heat wave with added shade sails, ice/frozen treats, and frequent rinses with the hose. Here’s our handsome Bubbles making a morning appearance when he heard the hose running.

Stay cool everyone!

We had a bit of a scare last week with Poppy - she became lethargic and wouldn’t eat or drink and sounded congested. I thought it might be helpful to share what we did to take care of her until we got the go ahead from a vet to treat her with antibiotics for what seems to have been a respiratory infection. We took her temperature (101 - which is in the normal range), counted her respiratory rate (15-20 breaths per minute is the normal range), we tried to get her heart rate (which should be 60-100 bpm) but couldn’t get the stethoscope to work through her fur, checked that her gums were pink and her eyes were clear. With all of these showing up as normal, we proceeded to give her a B vitamin complex mixed in Gatorade (this had to be syringe fed as she was not drinking when offered) as well as some probiotics. Her very favorite treat is watermelon so I did continue to offer it. Just the vitamins and probiotics started to turn her around and I figured if she did need some antibiotics, building up her gut was a good idea. This first aid took her from being concerningly lethargic to walking around and starting to eat and drink again. Now she is on a 2 week course of antibiotics and is no longer congested. Big thanks for for making the runs to get supplies in the middle of a dust storm ❤️‍🩹

We’ve been hard at work making some much needed improvements to Gentle Acres! Our makeshift tortoise enclosure was no longer…well…enclosing. The shed setup served us well but as time went on, aluminum siding was no match for tortoise shells. Now we have the TORT FORT! Each tort has their own climate controlled house with cameras to make sure we can always keep an eye on their temperatures, custom-made heavy duty vinyl flap doors to keep the heat in, wind and weather proofing and their own courtyards to roam around. We also now have irrigation running out to keep water sources nearby and new field fencing going up! Thank you to everyone who has contributed, either financially or with time, efforts, and services to make it all happen!

Resident pot belly pig Templeton loves his free rein of the property, whether it’s to go for a stroll, sleep in the horse corrals, or come to the door screaming for treats. 🥹

The monsoons are back! We’re always nervous about the tortoises’ burrows flooding but their instincts usually bring them out of their burrows at the first hint of rain. Here is Bubbles soaking in the warm summer rainfall. Norma is sitting at the opening of her burrow assessing the situation.
