Winter Weather Preparedness
With a potentially record-setting winter storm forecasted this weekend, now is a good time to make sure you and your family are ready. Much of Marquette County is expected to receive up to 3 feet of snow between Saturday night through Tuesday morning. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office recommends taking steps to prepare for this storm now and to limit non-essential travel once the storm begins.
Here are a few simple steps to prepare:
• Stock up on essentials – Have enough food, water, medications, and pet supplies to last 3-5 days. Those with well water should consider filling jugs of water for drinking and food preparation. Also, consider filling your tub with water to use for flushing toilets.
• Check emergency supplies – Flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a first aid kit should be easy to access.
• Charge devices – Make sure phones, power banks, and important electronics are fully charged before the storm arrives.
• Prepare your vehicle – Keep your gas tank at least half-full and store a winter emergency kit in your car (blankets, snacks, shovel, and jumper cables).
• Prepare snow removal equipment – Fuel, spare parts (ie shear pins), and in good working order
• Plan for power outages – Know how you’ll stay warm safely if the power goes out. Consider increasing the temperature inside your house before you lose power. Report power outages to your power company.
During this storm, stay indoors if possible and check on neighbors, especially older adults or anyone who may need assistance. Call 9-1-1 if you or someone you know is in danger. Individuals needing resources may contact 2-1-1.
A little preparation now can make a big difference during severe winter weather. Stay safe and stay warm!
