Regal was born May 2015. He was given to an elderly gentleman at two months old. His owner had his own mobility issues and lived on a fixed income. He named the pup Regal because the pup looked so proud, like he was royalty. Being from a generation that believed that big dogs weren't supposed to be house dogs, Regal lived his life outdoors. His owner bought him a nice dog house, but Regal rarely u
sed it. Regal would try to get in the house every chance he got. Regal almost never left the backyard. His owner did take him to the vet to make sure Regal was current on his shots. On the second trip to the vet, Regal's owner asked to the vet to see why Regal frequently limped and sometimes fell down. The vet suspected hip dysplasia but need xrays to confirm it. Regal's owner couldn't afford that so he contacted us at the suggestion of the local municipal shelter when he called them for some assistance. As the gentleman couldn't afford the xrays, he knew he couldn't afford to fix what might be wrong with Regal. We made arrangements to get the dog. When the gentleman couldn't get Regal in the car on his own, he called animal control to come pick him up. We immediately went and got Regal from the shelter and put him into a foster home. His foster parents took him to see Dr. Dean at Fort Worth Veterinary Surgical and, after several X-rays and ruling out Degenerative Myelopathy, he recommended a double hip replacement to give Regal the chance at a long term quality of life that he deserves. Dr. Dean was generous enough to give Regal and Good Shepherd Rescue a discounted rate for the procedures. Even with this substantial discount we received an estimate of $12,000.00 for surgery on both hips, x-rays, medications, post operative laser therapy, physical therapy and more. Good Shepherd Rescue decided that Regal's life was worth it and he underwent the first hip replacement surgery on Tuesday, April 12th, 2016 before he turned 1 year old. The next surgery will take place in June. Please help Good Shepherd Rescue and Sanctuary of Texas raise the much needed funds to ensure beautiful Regal gets the quality of life he truly deserves.
