LANCASTER − The Civil War ended in 1865. But a local group is making sure people of today remember it and are educated about it.
While the 12-member William McKinley Camp 21 group does partake in Civil War reenactments, that is not its main focus.
"We are a fraternal organization that focuses on Civil War history and preserving the history of the Union army and its veterans and honoring them," group member Bruce Hajost said.
The chapter each year lays a wreath on the Civil War monument at Forest Rose Cemetery each year, as it recently did.
"That was a wonderful ceremony," Hajost said. "It was a very sincere and solemn ceremony for the 18 Union army veterans of the Civil War who are laid to rest there. We honored them and commemorated their service to the nation and everything they did and the service they offered to preserve our great nation."
William McKinley Camp 21 started in 1901 and disbanded sometime after the last of the Union Army veterans died around the mid-1900s. The organization was reformed in 2007 and has been operating consistently ever since.
Hajost has been a member for about two years after meeting someone at a birthday party for city native Gen. William Sherman at The Mill Event Center who invited him to a meeting.
William McKinley Camp 21 meets at 7 p.m. on third Tuesday of the month from January through November at American Legion Post 11 at 279 Canal St. Anyone wanting to join the group should attend a meeting.
