DOWNTOWNERS AROUND TOWN-THE SPONTANEOUS MEETUP FOR COFFEE

How did this happen?

It started when Downtowners Board Vice President Ellen had a birthday and was walking home after a celebratory dinner. As she passed by Denim Coffee on W King St, many local business people and members of local organizations were gathered there for a SoWe Neighborhood Social Meetup. After stopping to talk with some familiar faces, she was invited inside, remembering that the recent move of the Downtowners office to Landis Place on King next door now gives us a connection to the SoWe Neighborhood.

After being encouraged to drop a Downtowners business card into a bucket for a chance to win some prizes, the winners were picked and the Downtowners were picked as the winners of the big prize of $50 in Downtown Dollars. Then the whole room sang Happy Birthday to Ellen, as she continued to sip on a very good espresso martini, made for the occasion with Denim Coffee.

Here are some of the many Downtowners who showed up this morning at Denim for a spontaneous early morning meetup to give our Downtown Dollars winnings back to the community.

OUR 2026 DOWNTOWNERS ANNUAL MEETING

Many of our members gathered this week at Hub 450 for fellowship and finger foods followed by a warm welcome by Board President Dick and an introduction to our new Executive Director Katy. Then Board Treasurer Claire shared the customary financial report followed by brief introductions to some of our sponsors who took the time to join us.

A sincere thank you goes out to the sponsors in attendance this year, including Landis Communities, Everence Financial, HARTZ Physical Therapy, Score of Lancaster/Lebanon, Angels (Lancaster, PA) and Chestnut Street Investment Counsel.

It was great to see all of the Landis Communities representatives who joined us last night at our annual meeting. We are grateful to all of our sponsors who continue to support our mission.

Last night was the annual meeting of Lancaster Downtowners. We are glad to be collaborative partners with this group who has as their mission engaging older adults in meaningful opportunities that build a multi-dimensional support network to stay informed, involved, and independent in the city of Lancaster. Thanks to all who made this a wonderful evening.

We provide this independent group office space; Human Resources support for staff and consultation with select centralized services.

Downtowners are excited to share about a new collaboration with members of the CAT Group-the Community Action Team, which is a part of the Core Class of Leadership Lancaster, a community-focused nonprofit that trains and connects emerging and established leaders.

Pictured here are three members of this year’s Core Class at a recent Downtowners board meeting. They are part of a team who will be working with us for nine months when they will learn about who we are and how far we’ve come as valued members of the community.

The goal for this project is to make recommendations to raise awareness of our mission for our continued growth serving the growing Elder-Gen population of Lancaster City and County.

Today is an important day to remember.

As Downtowners, we represent a portion of a diverse Elder-Gen population within a growing small city and suburban area, where we strive to make aging the best it can be with the support of the members of our vibrant, connected community.

DOWNTOWNERS BACK ON THE WALK AUDIT TRAIL

Our AARP Community Challenge Walk Audit continued this Saturday on East Chestnut Street in Lancaster. Even though the city was buzzing with activities over the weekend, another group of Downtowners put on their yellow vests with clipboards in hand to travel several city blocks to observe conditions relating to safe and enjoyable walks.

Karl Graybill (grey cap), a retired Environmental Planner with the City of Lancaster and Downtowner Linford (red cap) helped to guide our volunteers from Plum St to Queen St, pointing out areas of concern to be conscious of, including uneven sidewalks and protruding pipe line caps that are just two important indicators of challenging walking conditions if we’re not paying attention.

Joining the group were Downtowners and Landis Place On King residents Carol and Marti, who have recently started their own personal crusade to identify places of business in the downtown area that they would love to enjoy going to like the rest of us, but unfortunately can’t because of the inaccessibility of the motorized chairs that they both depend upon so much.

It is notable to add that several times, passersby stopped to inquire about who we were and what we were doing since seeing a large group of Elder-Gens navigating the city sidewalks and crosswalks with clipboards can certainly be a curious sight. Of course, we were proud to share our role with this important AARP initiative. Sharing their insights of navigating the streets in their motorized chairs proves to be an important part of the audit.

CASUAL GATHERINGS WITH FRIENDS

Thanks to the Lancaster Brewing Company for saving our Elder-Gen group a corner of the bar to enjoy our monthly traveling happy hour.

Lancaster Brewing Company is a long standing member of the local food and beverage scene, located on the corner of East Walnut and North Plum Streets, and has served their award winning beers and accompanying pub fare for decades. The large open warehouse space provides a great view of the majestic brew system that shares the room with the sounds of a faithful crowd enjoying their experience.

DOWNTOWNERS AND FRIENDS ON THE WALK AUDIT TRAIL

Groups of Downtowners along with their friends have been traveling the streets of Lancaster to participate in the AARP Community Challenge Walk Audit.

This effort in collaboration with AARP, is designed to take a closer look at our streets and sidewalks to identify opportunities to improve walkability, and we are pleased to be a part of it.
