“Hello. My name is Inigo Monturkey. You defrosted my father. Prepare to dine.”

One of our most iconic birds is hard to miss, unless it’s coming in hot at 50 mph (yes, they can fly for short distances) or sprinting 18 mph straight at your kneecaps. Inconceivable? Exactly. Lost track of one? Don’t worry, they leave receipts. Male droppings are j-shaped; female droppings are spiral-shaped. The larger the diameter, the older the bird. Congrats, you’re now the weird relative who measures turkey p**p at Thanksgiving. The kids’ table is calling.

Pro tip: Shiny objects, windows, and bald heads have been known to trigger vengeance mode. Be safe out there. In conclusion, Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the National Park Service. 🦃

Are you ready for , where Katmai’s beefiest bruins flaunt their fluff, vying for glory as if they’re the wobbliest, blue-ribbon-winning Jell-O mold at a Midwest state fair?

One of the biggest questions we get during this week is, “How do you weigh the bears?” We get asked a lot of things, but this one is pretty big. Pun definitely intended.

So, how do you weigh the bears? The answer is: once. Just kidding! We could try getting a bear to sit nicely on a scale or just ask them flat-out what they weigh (rude), but good luck finding volunteers for that job. Before you raise your hand saying it’s your destiny, think it over. Who really wants to lug a giant doctor’s scale—one that no one really knows how to use—into the Alaskan wilderness and politely ask a 600-pound grizzly to step on it… before it steps on you? Huh? Anyone? Wow, so many hands are still raised.

Let’s go deeper. In the past, terrestrial LiDAR scanning has been used to calculate estimated volumes of some of the largest bears. However, another tried-and-true method is called “eyeballing it.” Bear with us. Actually, let’s go with “visual estimation” instead. That’s park-speak for eyeing a bear’s big belly, comparing it to, say, a barrel of salmon or a particularly stuffed camper van, and declaring, “That’s a proper unit.” No scales, no tape measures—just years of gawking at chunky bears and guesstimating their size. It’s a gift.

You can practice your best weight-guessing skills starting this week as you vote for your favorite fat bears. Matchups are open for voting from September 23–30, between 12 p.m.–9 p.m. Eastern (9 a.m.–6 p.m. Pacific). Learn more at: https://explore.org/fat-bear-week

When your friend says, “Act natural,” but you’re both terrible at it.

Prairie dogs: proof that great things happen when you stick together. These little chatterboxes live in tight-knit ‘towns,’ say hello with adorable nose boops, and always keep an eye out for their neighbors. Basically, they’re the ultimate community organizers of the animal kingdom!

Happy 81st birthday to the one and only Smokey Bear, our favorite U.S. Forest Service ranger! 🎂

The best gift you can give Smokey? Do your part to prevent wildfires. Yellowstone is currently at a very high fire danger level, so it's more important than ever to follow campfire safety steps:
🔥SOAK the fire until all steam stops
🔥STIR the ashes to uncover hidden embers
🔥FEEL the fire pit and only leave when it's cool

👉Stay up to date on current fire activity and restrictions in the park by visiting go.nps.gov/YELL_fire

If you see a horse stretched out on its side, chances are… it’s just snoozing, not sick or dying. Please don’t panic or call us—it’s normal behavior, and we’ve gotten quite a few worried calls over the years!

Horses are polyphasic sleepers, meaning they sleep in short bursts throughout the day and night. They get about 2 to 5 hours of total sleep in a 24-hour period—but only around 30 to 60 minutes of REM sleep, which requires them to lie down.

While they can nap standing up—thanks to a unique “stay apparatus” that locks their legs—they still need to lie down briefly each day to enter deep, restorative sleep.

Fun fact: horses can’t lie flat for long periods, as their own body weight can cause discomfort or circulation issues. But a short nap in the sun? Totally normal.

But if you see Ranger Peelee taking a nap, let us know immediately.
