🍂🖌Some fun was had last night as cordage was braided and the paints and glue flowed! Our October 2nd Friday Family Craft Night: Gourd Decorating-- brought out everyone's inner artist as we worked with gourds grown from the Blue Rock Heritage Center !

🍂🖌After a delicious potluck dinner, our friend, Lynette McCall (Hopi-Huulapai), shared a brief overview of differing tribal gourd art- highlighting that nations use gourds for many reasons and purposes, ie., making them into corn-filled rattles or crafting them into an instrument.
Then all who wished were able to work with a gourd and create a unique piece of art to take home!

🍂🖌Thank you Lynette, for leading our craft night, and thank you to everyone who gathered, shared food, and brought your inner artist out to play!

🪶🔶🪶 Yesterday, in partnership with & Marshall College and the project, Circle Legacy Center co-hosted a potent gathering on Hartman Green for Truth & Reconciliation Day (Orange Shirt Day).

🪶🔶🪶Our time together was marked by personal and cultural stories, a land acknowledgement, The Ganö:nyök (Seneca Thanksgiving Address) given by CLC interim executive director Jess McPherson (Susquehanna), updates on the current research being pursued to remember every child and lineage impacted by boarding school experiences, an honoring and blanket ceremony of Native elders and activists, Eugene Black Crow (Oglala Lakota) and Sandi Cianculli (Oglala Lakota), and a to***co blessing. With care and tenderness, we honored the legacy of Indigenous children who endured, survived, or perished at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, as well as other boarding schools across Turtle Island.

🪶🔶🪶Nearly one hundred people gathered quietly to listen and learn from the speakers who bravely shared their stories and experiences. Lynette McCall (Hopi-Huulapai), Margie Cahoon (Bearskin Lake First Nation), Misty Rose Nace (Brokenhead Ojibway Nation and Roseau River Anishinabe), and Nathan Solario (Brokenhead Ojibway Nation and Roseau River Anishinabe) all spoke of their experience as boarding and residential school descendants. To close out our time together, Eugene Black Crow and CLC president Mary Ann Robins (Onondaga), with the help of other CLC friends and board members, shared To***co with attendees in gratitude and to bless our time together.

🪶🔶🪶Thank you to everyone who joined us. May we remember every child who endured the residential school experience, honor those who survived and their living Ancestors, and give a special blessing of peace for those who perished under the cultural genocidal project of military industrial schools. 🪶🔶🪶

🎥 ➡ Join us on Friday, September 11th, for a screening of the short film, "Cockacoeske’s Dilemma".
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

🪶Have you ever wondered how your life today might have been influenced by the things that happened to your ancestors? In this film, no enrollment card is needed to experience Virginia tribal history as you “walk in the ancestors' moccasins”.

🥣This event is free and open to the public. Bring a friend! As always 2nd Fridays are a community potluck, so if you’re able, please bring a dish or snack to share. To cut down on waste, we encourage you to bring your own place setting (plates, cups, etc.)
Donations welcome in-person or online.

CLC is celebrating the good work of our friends and colleagues at Dickinson College for the development of these programs: The Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center and the Jim Thorpe Center for Futures of Native Peoples.

Earlier this month along with CLC Board Secretary, Sandi Cianciulli, we welcomed, Lori Waselchuk to our 2nd Friday program. Sandi, along with our board president, MaryAnn Robins, are working with Waselchuk on a documentary about Indigenous Voices.

As always, our potluck was festive, fun (and delicious!) -and after sharing a meal, we were able to dive into various bodies of work that Waselchuk created over the last twenty+ years. One of the most potent aspects of Waselchuk's art is how she compassionately gives voice and presence to many people who would otherwise go unheard and unseen. We give a big THANK YOU to Waselchuk for documenting the valuable stories and lives of many people, and we look forward to witnessing how she will share the lives and stories of indigenous women in this next piece with Sandi and Mary Ann!
