The week of Outdoor Learning came to an end on Friday with quite a bit of rain. 🌧️ However, the children were so excited to dive deeper into their research!!

☔️Friday was spent gathering specimens that we would be able to research and observe while the rain was in full swing. The children were extremely focused on gathering different leaves, Mockberries, and worms! 🪱 They easily found at least 40 worms by the end of the exploration!!

One of the children found a “really cool rock” and was excited to add it to our collection for the research part of our day! It turned out to be a Berea Sandstone and had been split in half. The children drew the rock in their research journals and then explored how soft the rock was, Miss. Katelynn even showed them they could break the rock with their hands!! 🪨

During the Kindergarten part of the day, the children discussed vertebrates vs invertebrates and even documented examples of different types of vertebrates!! 🩻

All in all, as the week came to an end, the teachers and the children were wishing for more time together outside. ☀️

For our Outdoor Learning on Thursday, the weather decided to rain in the morning, but then cleared up a little bit in the later morning!!

🌦️Thursday the teachers decided to pivot and use the sunshine to their advantage and complete our water exploration of the week! The children started out their day by discussing where water comes from, and how we as humans can manipulate water with different technologies.

The playground’s environment was provided with different water sources: cups, shallow tubs, a watering can, and pitchers filled with water.🚰 The children were then allowed to “freely explore” the sandbox with shovels and buckets. 🪏🪣 The teachers gave no instruction on what the goal was, as we wanted to observe what the children would create without direction. It was interesting to observe when and who found the sources of water around the environment they were working in.

While in the Workcycle, the children worked with the teachers to create bird feeders using materials Miss. Katelynn gathered! We all learned that painting peanut butter onto egg cartons was quite the messy craft!! 🥜

In Kindergarten, the children explored what would happen if the sandbox got flooded. They created dams and canals to direct the water, actively practicing the manipulation of water we had discussed earlier in the day!

For our Outdoor Learning that occurred on Wednesday, the children were unfazed by the rain and wanted to continue their explorations! Miss. Claire and Miss. Katelynn set up an additional shelter to the tent they had set up, this one covered the Geo-Dome and created a perfect space for all of us to be in that was out of the rain. ☔️

🌧️Wednesday began our adventures in the water lessons that were thoughtfully planned. The children were locked into a Water Wonders Lesson that Miss. Katelynn presented, they were so curious as to what would happen to the variables in our experiment and observation of the dissolving properties of water. The children continued their observations of the properties of water by using eye-droppers and pennies to test out the tension of the water molecules.💧

🗺️Miss. Katelynn made copies of a map of the playground that Miss. Cheryl had created and the children worked together to explore Cartography. It was so fun to observe them extend the presentation and use the maps to document where certain types of plants were on the playground!

🐜Miss. Claire gathered food items that would work as our variables in an experiment to see which items the ants liked the most. To begin Miss. Katelynn discussed with the children the different parts of an ant and hypothesized with them on what the ants would like the most. Then we observed the ants that were emerging from one of the stumps, they loved the Oreo and pretzel pieces. And they drank the pineapple juice that was on the plate as well!!

While the weather on Monday was absolutely perfect for our Outdoor Learning at Lancaster Montessori School, Tuesday showed us what the rest of the week had in store for us in our adventures outside.

🌦️Tuesday started out wonderful, Miss. Katelynn was able to present the Clothes Washing station. Some of the children were able to recognize the procedure from when Miss. Joyce visited us last year to demonstrate using a washboard! 🫧

During the Outdoor Workcycle the children were presented a craft where they created a Nature Box and then explored how to navigate Bucket Walkers

During our last week of learning for the 2025-2026 school year, we completed our Outdoor Learning!

☀️Monday the weather was absolutely perfect! Miss. Claire and Miss. Katelynn were able to present lessons and presentations just as planned. 📝

The children explored the Stations around the playground’s environment. Which included: Observation, Research, Water Works, Rock Sifting, Planting, & a Hydration Station where the children had their water bottles for easy access!

During the discussion of the What’s Wild? Lesson, the children were able to provide characteristics and examples of domesticated and wild animals!

The Baskets! Game Miss. Katelynn adapted for the children was such a hit. It took the children a few tries but they had so much fun making a Basket and then getting to shout out for their friends when they made one!🗑️

During the Kindergarten part of the day, the children went around the playground’s environment to locate an insect we could identify and study. We were able to locate a jumping spider on the pirate ship, who was kind enough to be still while we filled out a data sheet to document our observations. Miss. Katelynn released the jumping spider right back where the children found her. 🕷️

All in all, Monday was the perfect for our first day of Outdoor Learning!!
