The Rangers hosted a playoff game for the first time since 2023 as the Massillon Washington Tigers visited Garfield Soccer Stadium. It was the first ever meeting in girls soccer between the two schools. Lakewood prevailed 6-1 to advance to the District Final against fourth ranked Avon. It was Lakewood’s first post-season victory since 2021 when Lakewood defeated Barberton.
Team 37 was amped up for the game with a large Student Section and family and friends from the Lakewood soccer community filling the stands. Lakewood started strong but couldn’t score until the 20th minute. Outside midfielder Kenna Callahan (‘30) dribbled down the left sideline before playing a diagonal ball to switch the point of attack to Stella Sattler (‘29) who was playing left outside mid. It was like the team practiced switching the point of attack in the attacking half all week. Stella received the pass and touched toward goal. As if the team practiced not shooting the ball directly at the goalkeeper this week, Stella struck the ball away from the Keeper to the far post. The ball caromed off the post where Sam Moran (‘29) buried the rebound to put the Rangers ahead with 20:23 remaining in the first half.
Eight minutes later, the Tigers tied the score, 1-1. Although Lakewood dominated territory and possession, they only had one goal to show for it. The excitement of the game perhaps caused too much individual effort rather than calmly playing together. When an injury to a Washington player paused the game with about 10 minutes left in the half, the Rangers huddled together and also came together. For the rest of the game, the Rangers dominated on the scoreboard as well as the field.
In the last 10 minutes, the Rangers scored 2 to take a commanding halftime lead. Lakewood’s second goal came after center back co-captain Carys Crone (‘27) chest trapped and volleyed the ball to forward Norah McKay (‘30). It was almost as if the team had practiced chest traps and volleys during a long pre-game warm up. McKay dribbled forward and found co-Captain Teagan Sefchick (‘29) in another forward position. McKay kept running while Sefchick turned and dribbled at the last defender. As if the team had practiced 2v1 situations the day before, Teagan drew the defender toward her and passed it not to McKay’s feet but to space where McKay could run on to it. McKay stayed onside and then finished her run collecting the ball at the penalty spot. McKay took a touch, spotted the Keeper, and finished it in the upper corner of the goal to give the Rangers the lead for good.
Lakewood’s third goal game just before halftime. Elisa Nomina (‘30) half-volleyed a ball from her right outside back position to Sefchick. Sefchick calmly received the pass and slipped the ball through the Tiger backline to a streaking Sam Moran (‘29). Moran drove the ball into the box and also spotted the Keeper before driving the ball hard into the far side-netting. It was almost as if the team had practiced finding the side-netting instead of the goalkeeper that week.
The Rangers took a 4-1 lead 7 minutes into the second half. Fallon Popovich (‘27) played a long ball from her defensive position over the Tiger midfield and defenders into the opponent’s box. Norah McKay tracked the long pass and calmly took it on a bounce and finished nicely while the Tiger goalkeeper came off her line.
Inexplicably, the Rangers conceded a penalty kick with a handball in the box. The Tigers leading goalscorer stepped up to take the kick but was denied by Lakewood goalkeeper Isla Fillipek (‘29). Fillipek dove to her right and punched the ball away and the Rangers alertly cleared the rebound. Washington would not get close to scoring again.
Lakewood led 5-1 after Stella Sattler took a corner kick. After the ball was deflected around, it came back to Stella who had made a run toward the goal. She struck the ball again but it was blocked high into the air. Kenna Callahan leaped and headed it back to Sattler. Stella showed how she is capable of playing with grit when she beat the defender to the ball and finished with a strong shot into the far corner.
Lakewood closed the scoring when Ainsley Tracey (‘30) won an attempted clearance just outside the box. She took two touches and struck it hard and low past the Tiger goalkeeper to cap the scoring. In the end, 7 Rangers contributed to goal scoring with goals or assists. Lakewood, who scored 14 goals in all of 2025, has now scored 42 goals this season.
The Rangers also got contributions from Anna Herb (‘27), Pip Speck (‘28), Gabby Markiewicz (‘28), Chloe Carroll (‘29), Maddy Klein (30), and Brooklyn Hoover (‘30).
The Rangers travel to Avon on Tuesday, October 27 for a 7:00 kickoff against the highly ranked Eagles. We can use the support of all of Lakewood! Come and watch us play.
