Lionel's Legacy

Lionel's Legacy Creating a legacy of COMPASSION, ADVOCACY, and EDUCATION through saving senior dogs. We have accomplished so much but still have a long way to go.
(2)

In 2011 we had the pleasure of fostering our first senior who was a 15 year old pittie mix pulled from a Los Angeles shelter. We had fostered many dogs before but the one who stole our hearts was Lionel. He was in horrible shape and wasn't given much time to live but his spirit and will amazed and inspired us all. After his passing, we soon realized the amazing gifts he shared with us and felt com

pelled to advocate for senior dogs in need. In the rescue world it's an extreme gamble as adoption rates for seniors are low and medical costs often high. As a result, so many senior dogs are left behind at the shelter to live out their final days in confusion and discomfort. It is our goal to save and advocate for ONE senior furbaby at a time, and support anyone who is willing to do the same. The second component to Lionel's Legacy is the message we share with our children. As an elementary school teacher, I've learned how little we are doing as a society to educate our children about humane issues involving animals. As a result, we have a mounting problem that so many rescues are working to resolve each day. Through our humane education program at Central Elementary, we will be working with Sweetwater High Animal CARE Club to provide an educational program to our students who have a passion for animals. The goal is for students to become compassionate, advocating, respectful, and educated animal lovers who can share their new found knowledge with their peers and leave a legacy that Lionel will remember!

Meet Molly! This adorable tripod is eleven years old and around thirty pounds. She is looking for her forever home and someone to share her never ending love with.

Molly is a gentle, affectionate, and social girl who adores people, loves kids, car rides and gets along beautifully with other dogs. Molly LOVES to go out for a walk! She is quite fit and can go for medium length walks. She weighs about 20 lbs with a sleek black coat and lovely tan markings, and yes, she knows she is pretty! Molly recently also joined the club after having her leg removed, but she is not disabled. This housebroken sweetheart walks like a dream on a leash, knows some basic commands, and is always eager to make you smile. Molly would love a home with a yard. she loves a little time in the sun and minimal stairs. Molly is independent yet attentive, happy just to be near you, whether it is snuggling on the couch or enjoying a peaceful walk together. Oh and she loves a good conversation too!

Molly may be a senior, but her zest for life and her loving heart are timeless. She deserves the best of the best, a forever home where she will be cherished for the amazing girl she is. Molly is ready to steal your heart!

In Loving Memory of Sasha

To honor the life of this beautiful girl and the connections she formed, we’d love to share with you her story from the eyes of her forever foster!

For the last 2.5 years Sasha was my ride or die party girl, we were equally bonded with one another. She was so much fun, talkative, playful, and sassy. I’d come home from a long day and as soon as I walked in she was yelling and screaming wooo wooo’s at me with excitement. She was the first I’d say hi to in the morning and the last I’d kiss goodnight. She was all of those wonderful things even with multiple chronic medical conditions. Her spirit and energy were extraordinary. Im a sucker for the big dogs, selfishly, they hug almost like hugging a human. Sasha was by far the best hugger ever and although she loved the attention, I know it made her hot. She never flinched or pulled away when i needed a long hug, infact, she closed her eyes and leaned in every time, even when she wasn’t feeling well. When Sasha came to us she was a cruelty/neglect case from Humane and was confiscated by animal control from her home. She had a huge ulcerated cancerous mass on her tail so we had to amputate it. She hopped around like the cutest fluffiest bunny and her little nub was always going a million miles an hour. As time passed she developed multiple internal and external masses, some we could address and some we could not. We knew it was a matter of time and that something would likely rupture and it would be quick. As long as she wanted to keep going and was comfortable then I was up for helping her cross the finish line. Yesterday, Sue Hunter Platt (Sarah) stopped by and we went in the back yard to play with the dogs. There was a big rope toy out that she hadn’t played with in months. My great Dane Max picked it up and ran around with it and out of nowhere Sasha got a moment of excitement and ran after him to tell him, “oh no you don’t!” Sarah and I both looked at each other and said well that might just be the thing that puts her over the edge. Sasha made her own rules and in the end she went out as the sassy party girl we’ve always known her to be. We’re going to miss you so much. 🤍

🐾 Meet the Team: Dr. Zoie Schaefer, DVM! 🐾

We are beyond thrilled to highlight Dr. Schaefer, she has been with our Free to Chew low-cost dental clinic right from the start, helping shape and grow our services to support local pet families.

Dr. Schaefer brings a great passion and background for shelter and rescue medicine. Her heart lies in spay/neuter initiatives, having worked extensively with incredible community organizations like SNAP (Spay Neuter Action Project) and the FCC (Feral Cat Coalition).

At Lionel's Legacy, our goal is to to get straight to the "root" of pet health issues through preventative and accessible dental care. Dr. Schaefer helps our team and families keep pets healthy and pain-free with the families who love them. Her dedicated work alongside the Free To Chew clinic prevents unnecessary pet surrender, avoids heartbreaking euthanasia when possible, and provides affordable, subsidized medical care to those who need it most.

We are so incredibly lucky and grateful that she chose to help us serve our community. Thank you, Dr. Schaefer, for your relentless dedication to pets and their people!

ADOPT ME!!!

Meet Jade! She is nine years old and around eleven pounds. Jade is looking for her forever home and would love to be your new best friend!

Jade is a smart, curious, sweetheart who has one tiny, okay, maybe medium quirk: She does not like to share her sidewalk with unknown dogs. She is currently attending training sessions and she is growing a tiny bit more accepting of other dogs every day. Still, she is a great girl! She is housebroken, easy going, and can be left alone during the workday. She knows some basic commands, loves treats, and enjoys the occasional squeaky toy. She is the perfect apartment sized dog who likes walks where she can sniff everything. She would prefer to be the only pet, ideally with a fenced yard or in a quiet neighborhood where we can go for walks without running into a parade of canine friends. All she needs is someone patient who will continue her positive reinforcement training. Jade is a work in progress, but she is totally worth the effort!

FOREVER FOSTER FRIDAY!!!

Meet Ike, found as a stray and transferred to our rescue December 11th, 2024. Ike truly is a ray of sunshine.

Ike is just happy to be here. Easy going, nice to everyone. Just give him a daily walk, some pets, and he will be your best friend. He greets all people and animals with a tail wag. He has made a mental note of where the dogs live in the neighborhood so he can stop and say hi. Tolerant of his young foster brother jumping all over him, avoidant of the resident grumpy old man who grumbles at big dogs, fully potty trained, respectful of the house, excellent on a leash, and sits on command.

Ike is a total dream.

Ike came to us overweight and seemingly arthritic, with multiple masses. With healthy food and exercise, he has dropped 15 pounds. He loves long walks and is ready for his stitches to heal so he can go swimming at the bay. His eyes and teeth are in great shape.

Ike would be an easy addition to any home, especially if it comes with pet companions.

Ike is one of 30+ Forever Fosters in our care due to medical and/or behavioral needs that are best supported in a lifelong foster home. Thanks to our incredible foster families and monthly sponsors, Lionel’s Legacy provides necessary food, supplies, and medical care for life. ❤️
