About La Leche League

The LLL Mission

La Leche League International strives to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. The LLL Philosophy

The basic philosophy of La Leche League is summarized i

n the following statements:

Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby. In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with his mother which is as basic as his need for food. Breast milk is the superior infant food. For the healthy, full-term baby, breast milk is the only food necessary until the baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth. Ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need. Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start. Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby's father. A father's unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child's development from early infancy. Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible. From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.

Babies have their own feeding patterns. Some feed at regular intervals. Others feed very irregularly. Some babies cluster feed. This means they nurse very often for a few hours and then sleep for several hours. A good milk supply is established by following your baby’s feeding cues, not scheduling feedings. Cues may include licking lips, restlessness, rooting (turning head towards breast) or mouthing hands. Crying is a late hunger cue. Typically 8 to 12 feeds or more within 24 hour is expected.

“Pass the gravy, not the baby” is a great phrase to remember this time of year.

Thanksgiving often means family and friends including many who want to hold the new baby. Many parents find that it helps to set limits and boundaries and it’s also ok to say no!

Here are some tips for breastfeeding during the holidays:
- Be alert to your baby’s cues.
- Be prepared to intervene if your baby is getting over-stimulated or needs to nurse.
- Try finding a quiet place to nurse so that your baby is less distracted.
- Don’t allow yourself to feel guilty if breastfeeding is preventing you from “helping out”.
- Babywear!

Meetings are run by La Leche League Leaders that have all breastfeed their own children.

Each of our Leaders have personal experience breastfeeding our own children. Collectively we have breastfed through many different experiences. All our Leaders have gone through an accreditation process so we have a good foundation of breastfeeding knowledge and we make sure to continue adding to this knowledge.
