A nice article featured in the Seymour Herald in Wayne County speaking of the upcoming 180th anniversary of the Mormon trek through Iowa. IMTA member Brenda Devore submitted the information to the newspaper.

Questions lately have been focused on IMTA expanding our trail. Our group really would like to do this but we are having trouble getting members in each county to volunteer on the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail from Montrose to Council Bluffs. Meetings are on livestream or live at this time so expanding can be possible and could be a good idea. There is at least 50 -100 miles between the handcart trail and the original trail and there is a trail in northern Iowa that is at least 400 miles from the original trail in distance. That is why we need volunteers from those counties since we don't know your trails. We have walked your trails. We don't know where particular sites for signage should be. If you know people who are interested and live on the other trails in Iowa. Answer this post or send us a private message on our Messenger link. We may never be able to get government authorization for these portions of the trail but maybe there are other avenues that can be investigated for signage. This is not necessarily the thoughts of all IMTA members but I, Jane Briley, secretary of IMTA, thought I would throw this idea out for discussion,

On October 20th representatives from the National Mormon Trails Association, the Iowa Mormon Trails Association, and the Drakesville Betterment Committee gathered to dedicate two new wayside signs. The National Park Service designed and produced the new sign that replaced an original 1990s sign that was placed on the Drakesville Oval. The Scenic Hills Historic Byways designed and produced the second sign located at the Drakesville city park near a recently restored 1848 Mormon built cabin. National Mormon Trails Association President Diane Schultz’s spoke , telling stories of the western trek and speaking of the footsteps left by the early Saints. Special thanks goes to Susan Hopkins of the Drakesville Betterment Committee, Christina Hedstrom of the Historic Hill Scenic Byways whom designed the wayside at the park, and the Iowa Mormon Trails Association whom all spoke at the event. Great teamwork by all!
