Last week Evelina Cabrera visited Child Aid Girls Clubs throughout the rural highlands of Guatemala. The girls had read her book Juana La futbolista, and we shared the impact it had on them here. This caught Evelina’s attention, and after much planning and preparation, she made it to Guatemala to meet the girls.

Last week we travelled over 600 kilometers with Evelina, visiting five girls clubs. Each visit was unique and special, but we closed out each meeting the same way - Evelina took pictures with the girls and signed their activity book, leaving personal notes for each.

These unique mementos were made possible thanks to Scout Books who printed the custom books for the girls.

What better way to wrap up this week than with a recap of our last day in Guatemala with Evelina Cabrera.

We spent our fifth and final day with the students of EOUM Barrio la Ciénaga in San Cristobal. The school gave us a truly special greeting, with students dancing, poems read in Quiche (the Mayan language) and Spanish, and gifts from the region.

After a massive group photo, Evelina and the Girls Club made their way up to a classroom, where they had a chance to share a writing activity with her. The club split into two groups, each writing a story about Evelina. It was in this activity that we saw how beautifully the Girls Program and Child Aid's Reading for Life program complement each other. The girls used the skills they learned from Child Aid teachers in the classroom to write their stories, and it was the Girls Club safe space where they found their confidence to read them aloud and share them with Evelina. It was a touching moment for all who were there to witness it.

When we launched the Girls Program back in 2023, we wanted to foster growth and confidence during a critical time in these girls lives. Experiences like the one we had in this class are proof that we are.

For those of you following along on our recap of last week's travels with Evelina Cabrera, today we are looking back at the fourth day - a day spent with two amazing Girls Clubs in Totonicapán.

The first club we visited had recently finished Evelina's book "Juana la futbolista" and the girls each had their copy at their desks. They followed along as Evelina read aloud one of their favorite sections. This was a perfect ice breaker for the conversation that followed. The girls shared what they wanted to be when they grow up, the role models they have in their lives, and what school provides for them. Before leaving, Evelina signed the girl's activity books, writing a personal message in each of them.

Then we headed up the mountain to our second stop of the day, EORM Paraje Chuichaj Pachaj. The sun was shining bright as the kids took to the courtyard for a soccer clinic with Evelina. The girls club was joined by other sixth grade students, all of whom were excited to learn and play. From soccer drills to short matches, the kids practiced and played.

A huge shout out to Scout Books for printing the activity books for all the girls in the clubs we visitied this week! And a big thanks to Leveling the Playing Field, Inc. for all the soccer gear for the soccer clinics!

Let's continue our reflection on last week's trip visiting classrooms and Girls Clubs with Evelina Cabrera!

The third day of the trip was the busiest of them all. We got going early and drove to the remote community of Vasconcelos. There Evelina visited with two families who had girls in the local Girls Club. These visits were a chance to put the Child Aid programming into context, each family shared how the girls had benefited from having a safe space to read and explore topics of importance to them.

From there, we headed to the Vasconcelos school where all the students came out to meet us. This school graduated from the Child Aid program last year as was evident by the fact that all the classrooms had reading corners, with bookshelves filled with Child Aid books. After greeting the students, Evelina ran a workshop with Child Aid trainers, with her new book "Fútbol Simple." She led them through training exercises - and we were happy to see that our trainers are also good students!

And finally, we finished the day with the community's Girls Club, where the students had fun-filled clinic with Evelina, practicing their soccer skills, and talking about the value of team work.

Our second day of Evelina's visit was dedicated to our Girls Clubs, an after-school reading program designed to give girls a safe space for reading and sharing. The clubs meet in schools and community spaces every week, giving girls an opportunity to explore difficult topics and build lasting relationships.

We started the day at the Child Aid office in Panajachel, where program directors from each region shared about their clubs. The stories they shared were amazing - they're giving these girls the skills and confidence they need to read, write, and think critically and independently.

After lunch, we headed to Sacbochol, where we met with the girls' club that read Evelina's book, "Juana la futbolista." To say that the girls were excited to meet her is an understatement. The club shared an activity with Evelina and then the girls asked her questions about her book and her life, sharing their stories with her along the way. It was an emotion, special meeting that will stay with us for a long time.

This week we are traveling around Guatemala with Evelina Cabrera, the author of "Juana la futbolista." It has been a busy week - we hope you have been following along with our stories and seeing the various classrooms, clubs and communities that we have visited.

Here are some photos from Monday. We visited two schools, the first was one of the smallest schools in the Child Aid program with only 15 students. The school is in the first year of the program and we got to see the teachers apply what they hare learning in their classrooms. The second school is one of the larger schools in the program with over 400 students, all of whom welcomed Evelina with balloons and much cheering.

We finished the day at the Child Aid office, where the trainers shared how, in the third year, they help teachers develop their students writing skills. Together we wrote a story about a dinosaur, a rat, and the volcano that threatened their community. The team prepared lunch for us to enjoy in their courtyard and we ended the day with a rousing mini soccer clinic led by Evelina.

Next week, something exciting is happening!

The author of one of our favorite books will be visiting Child Aid. From classrooms and reading clubs to sports clinics and time spent with families and teachers, she will be seeing the impact of her book firsthand, and we'll be sharing the journey with you along the way.

Evelina's book "Juana la futbolista" was chosen for our 2026 Girls Clubs - an after school reading program designed to give girls a safe space to read, write and think critically and independently. Each year our team purchases books that will foster discussion on issues related to our Club’s goals. Topics include stories of women who overcame obstacles to achieve; issues in reproductive health and decision making; leadership skills and challenges; goal setting; finding their own voice; and the high value of continuing their education.

Juana la futbolista is a club favorite and we can't begin to tell you how excited the girls are to meet the author! We will be sharing more about the book, our girls clubs, and documenting the visit here next week, be sure to follow along!

Our Girls' Clubs are a safe space for girls to explore their emotions. The teachers and coordinators work hard to create a trusting environment where girls are heard and feel empowered.

The staff is always coming up with new activities and worksheets like this tree of feelings, helping these girls understand how they feel and share it with others in a supportive environment.
