Featured Mega #5: Flora!!

This beautiful girl joined us a little over four years ago after an amazing miracle occurred.

Flora was at the vet in Utah because she had developed aspiration pneumonia and the vet was urging her owner to put her to sleep. Feeling that Flora needed a chance but also feeling helpless due to the lack of support from the vet, her owner put out a desperate plea on Facebook. Many miracles happened in a very short amount of time thanks to some amazing, kind hearted folks and Flora was on her way to the Sanctuary a couple days later! And now she is absolutely thriving!

Today is a very special day for Flora... it's her 5th birthday!!! This is such a huge milestone because she almost didn't even make it to her 1st birthday. Happy, happy birthday beautiful Flora!! May there be many more. πŸŽ‚πŸŒ»πŸ•β€οΈ

Moose update:

We did labwork earlier in the week and it came back with elevated liver numbers as well as elevated WBC. Moose has been started on an antibiotic in case there is some infection going on.

We are taking a homeopathic approach for the mass in Moose's lung. Our goal is to treat his symptoms and keep him comfortable. We have started one treatment and another will be arriving in a few days. A huge thank you to Tami for guiding us on this journey.

Moose will also go back to the vet after the antibiotics are finished to recheck the size of the mass, and we will go from there.

I'm sharing my absolute favorite picture of Moose, taken nearly 10 years ago when he first joined the Sanctuary. It was his first feeling of safety and comfort in his life, and he has known nothing but comfort and safety since then. That won't stop now. ❀️

Today's $5 Friday will be dedicated to Moose and his treatments. If you would like to send some love to Moose:

With all of the baby piggy excitement, I've really been slacking on Megaesophagus Awareness posts! Luckily, Michelle with Mega E Misfits is posting a lot of great information this month. I especially love this one. Mega-e can be expensive, but for the most part once the routine is dialed in, it gets much better. Unless there's emergencies, of course.

We are extremely fortunate that out of our current eight megas, only four are on any medication. Three are on sildenafil (aka Vi**ra. Yes... that Vi**ra. But for a different purpose) and one is on famotidine (aka Pepcid). Some megas are not as fortunate, especially if their megaesophagus is secondary to another medical issue, such as myasthenia gravis, laryngeal paralysis, Addison's, or autoimmune disorders like Lucky and Lucy had.

Thank you Michelle for allowing us to share your posts!

What an amazing day!

Duchess and the babes are settling in to their temporary enclosure. In a few days we'll move them to a larger one so they'll have more room to run and explore, but for now we just want them to feel safe and become more comfortable. The babies are the cutest little things ever!

Thank you so much to everyone who sent the babies some love from their registry! It had all of the most urgent needs on it, and everything was purchased so quickly. Absolutely amazing! We've added a few more needed items to the list that the piggies would also appreciate.

While we were in Vegas, we stopped by to see our friends at Hearts Alive Village and they sent us home with a ton of dog food, cat food, supplements, and other goodies. This is a tremendous blessing that helps out so much! Thank you Hearts Alive!

We're exhausted, but it was definitely a great, heart-warming day. πŸ’ž

Stay tuned for more baby updates!

We headed to Vegas to pick up Duchess today... and while we were driving there she had her babies! The shelter didn't even realize it until they went to get her for us.

So we're headed back to the Sanctuary now with Mama Duchess and her four pups. If you've never seen guinea pig pups before, it's pretty wild. They come out fully furred, eyes open, and hopping around!

We were hoping Duchess would have a few days to settle before having her babies, but she had other plans. Although not ideal, they are all safe and that's what matters.

Duchess and the babies do have a few needs so we've put together a baby registry. If you would like to send the new mommy and her bundles of joy a gift, here's the link:

Featured Mega #4: Zarina!

Zarina joined us in September of 2023 when she was about eight weeks old. Her story began when her mama was at a shelter in Kern County, California. A foster took her mama in, and Zarina and her brother were born shortly thereafter. After a few weeks, her foster noticed some regurgitation and bullfrogging (throat puffing out, especially when eating or excited). Suspecting that it was mega-e, we reached out to Kern County and became a rescue partner so we could have Zarina transferred to our care. Our suspicion was confirmed via x-ray and barium study.

Zarina is a very "easy" mega when it comes to meals. She does not eat in a Bailey chair, she does not need to eat soaked or blended food, and she tolerates plain water very well. The only thing that she needs is to be held upright immediately after eating. As soon as she burps, which only takes about a minute, she's good to go. She very, very rarely regurgitates. Zarina is a prime example of how megaesophagus care can vary greatly from dog to dog.

Zarina is a super sweet, completely hyperactive goof ball who absolutely loves her baby star treats and keeps us laughing every day! ❀️🐾❀️🐾❀️

Dumped at the shelter and pregnant. 😟

We would love to bring this sweetheart into the Sanctuary, but we will not be able to get to Las Vegas until Saturday. Anyone coming from Vegas to Havasu this week that might be able to give this little girl a lift?
