Charlie and Camila are a new pigeon couple! Charlie had been rescued and nursed back to health by a kind lady and her daughter. In spite of their love and kindness to him, Charlie was not a particularly friendly or happy bird. Wanting only the best for Charlie, they wondered if a mate or companion would allow him to be a happy bird. Charlie's humans brought him to AURA last Saturday to see if one of our ladies might catch his eye, and there was an almost instant connection between Charlie and Camila. It was a very happy ending for these two! Camila found not only a forever home but also a loving mate, and Charlie found the girl of his dreams! We're wishing Charlie Camila a long and happy life together! ❤️

Ichabod came into our care on the evening of July 22, 2026. We believe Ichabod was a Blue-fronted Amazon or possibly a hybrid. We're going to call Ichabod's owners John and Mary in Ichabod's story.

Ichabod appeared in John and Mary's backyard in Fullerton in 1979 or 1980 making Ichabod now at least 46+ years old. Mary had passed away in 2007, and John became Ichabod's sole caretaker for the next almost 20 years. At the age of 93, John became unable to care for himself or Ichabod, and John was moved to an assisted living facility. John's family had previously made arrangements for AURA to take in Ichabod as soon as John had been settled in his new home.

MaryAnne picked Ichabod up, became his foster, and all was well for a few days until Ichabod developed a massive and explosive case of diarrhea. It was frightening. Immediate veterinary care was obtained, and the exam and radiographs revealed that Ichabod's gizzard was full of metal fragments that had possibly been there for decades and that were now releasing toxins causing a gas build up which resulted in the diarrhea. Our veterinarian also found that Ichabod had advanced cases of fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis. Ichabod also had a bad eye that had been damaged at some point in the distant past.

Our veterinarian felt that Ichabod's prognosis was grim and recommended euthanasia. Though it broke our hearts to make that end of life decision, we did. Ichabod flew with the angels on July 29.

Even when the outcomes are sad, it's still our responsibility to provide the best care we possibly can for the birds that come our way. We are only able to do this through your financial support. Please donate if you can..

Nova was an Indian Ringneck Parakeet, and you met him briefly when he was posted as a shelter rescue back in June. Kaylee picked him up from the shelter and fostered him for us until he needed to come to us in Orange County for a second veterinary opinion and a final decision.

Nova's owner had moved out of state and left Nova behind. The roommate of Nova's owner didn't want Nova and relinquished him to the local animal shelter. The shelter asked AURA to take Nova, and with Kaylee's help, we did. Nova was almost featherless when we got him, and it looked quite possible that Nova's condition was due to more than a hard life and/or a poor diet. Nova's veterinary exam and tests resulted in the tragic finding that Nova was positive for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). There is no cure or treatment for this, and it is always ultimately fatal. PBFD is also very contagious and easily spread, so housing Nova in a home with other parrots wasn't an option. The decision we needed to make was whether to euthanize Nova or try to find a bird free hospice foster home for him for whatever time he had left.

Nova made that decision for us and passed away on his own in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, August 11, 2026. Fly free Nova. 💔🌈💔
