Ward 3 Recreation is aware of an incident that occurred in the parking lot of the Ward 3 Power Center on Thursday, June 5th. Earlier that afternoon, an altercation took place between two groups at a separate location in Lake Charles. When law enforcement was contacted regarding that situation, the individuals involved left that location, entered their vehicles, and drove to the Power Center parking lot, where the dispute continued.

It is important to clarify that this incident did not involve any Ward 3 Recreation patrons, programs, or activities, and did not occur inside any Ward 3 facility. The safety of our community members is our highest priority, and at no point were our guests or staff part of the altercation.

Ward 3 Recreation will continue to cooperate fully with local law enforcement and remains committed to providing safe, welcoming, and family‑focused environments across all of our facilities.

Special appreciation goes out to the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and their powerful Swim 1922 initiative for promoting water safety this morning at 2nd Avenue.

Their commitment to educating our community, uplifting families, and helping more people feel confident in the water made today’s instructional lessons truly meaningful. From teaching essential skills to spreading awareness about drowning prevention, they showed exactly what service in action looks like.

Thank you, Sigma Gamma Rho, for pouring into our community and helping us build a safer, stronger, and more water‑ready Lake Charles.

WARD 3’s COMMITMENT TO ADVANCED TRAINING IN SWIM INSTRUCTION REMAINS UNPARALLELED

Every community needs champions who refuse to accept drowning as an inevitable statistic — and here in Southwest Louisiana, where drowning rates remain among the highest in the nation, that mission becomes personal. That’s why having Billy, a seasoned American Red Cross WSIT from Texas, leading our instructor training is more than a professional development opportunity. It’s a statement.

At Ward 3 Recreation, we are the face of progress and intervention. We’re not waiting for change — we’re creating it. By hosting this training, we’re building a local network of certified water safety leaders who will teach, protect, and empower our residents for years to come.

This is how prevention looks.
This is how community leadership sounds.
This is how lives are saved.

And this is how Ward 3 Recreation continues to rise as a model for what proactive, community‑driven water safety truly means.

Today is National Water Safety Day — and we want every family to know that most drownings are preventable with multiple barriers in place.

We use the SPLASH acronym to make them easy to remember:
🔵 S — Safety fencing: A four-sided fence around your pool is your first and most critical barrier. It buys time.
🔵 P — Put away ladders & toys: Removing access points and pool toys keeps curious kids from getting in unsupervised.
🔵 L — Life jackets: A properly fitted, Coast Guard–approved life jacket is non-negotiable on open water or novice swimmers.
🔵 A — Adult watching always: Designate a water watcher — someone whose only job is eyes on the water. No multitasking. No distractions.
🔵 S — Swim lessons: Formal instruction builds water competency and reduces drowning risk by 88%!
🔵 H — How to help: Knowing CPR and how to respond to a water emergency can mean the difference between life and death.

Every layer matters. Share this today — it could save a life. 💙

Don't forget to assign a water watcher if you are spending time around water! A designated Water Watcher is a responsible adult who agrees to actively and constantly supervise children when in or around water without engaging in other activities or distractions. Designated Water Watchers should rotate every 15 minutes to keep attention fresh. https://ndpa.org/supervision/
