The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has postponed its previously scheduled business and legislative hearing that was to consider the nomination of Mark Cruz (Klamath) to serve as Director of the Indian Health Service and receive testimony on S. 4276, the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Modernization Act of 2026.

While today's hearing has been postponed, this does not diminish the meaningful momentum that has been built around NAHASDA reauthorization. As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of NAHASDA, the scheduling of this hearing represented the first hearing on NAHASDA reauthorization in the 119th Congress and an important milestone toward advancing long-overdue modernization of this foundational Tribal housing law.

NAIHC remains encouraged by the strong bipartisan support for S. 4276 and the continued leadership of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. We look forward to the hearing being rescheduled and will share updated information, including the new hearing date and webcast details, as soon as they become available.

Members of Congress are preparing to go on an extended recess break throughout the rest of July, August, and into September. During this time, we encourage Tribal leaders, TDHEs, regional housing associations, and partners across Indian Country to continue advocating for the reauthorization and modernization of NAHASDA. Your voices and leadership remain essential as we work together to advance this historic legislation.

To help maintain this important momentum, we strongly encourage you to invite your Representatives and Senators to visit your community while they are home during the district work period. These visits provide an invaluable opportunity for Members of Congress to see firsthand the housing needs, successes, and priorities of your Tribal community and to better understand the importance of modernizing NAHASDA.

To support your outreach efforts, we have included a link to the toolkit in the comments and encourage you to use this resource as a step-by-step guide for planning and hosting a successful congressional visit.
