Her brother is building his EB-1A with us. This week, she started her own EB-2 NIW.

Our daughter has no idea any of this happened. To her, palm trees at the end of the road, a backyard full of friends in princess dresses and a morning above the ocean in Hawaii are just what life looks like.

She’ll never meet the version of us that opened USCIS envelopes with shaking hands, or passed on business moves because one wrong step could put our status at risk.

When your status is shaky, the people around you can feel it, and some of them will use it.

Once we finally had solid ground, we could finally breathe.

We could say no, plan years ahead, and build a business on our own terms.

Ten Polish women who made their mark on America in the last century. I’m the youngest one in the book. 📖

“Polki w Ameryce” (Polish Women in America) tells the stories of women who crossed the ocean and built something impactful here. My chapter is called “Who America Is Waiting For.” ✨

Flipping through it again, I don’t see the happy ending first. I see the letter giving us 14 days to leave. The two denied applications. The years when not one law firm told us my own career could be our path to a green card. 😮‍💨

We figured it out ourselves. Five years, one step forward and two back. And the motto from that time still runs my life: Never take no for an answer. Look for your ways. 💪

Today, former USCIS officers and former consular officers work alongside us at America Unlocked, helping talented people present their careers in front of the system in the most impactful way. Full circle. 🔄

Self-sponsored visa petitioners think an officer is looking for a reason to say no.

This week we learned first hand that officers aren’t hunting for a reason to reject you. Approving a case is the easiest move. Denying it takes hours of paperwork, and it can land the officer in front of a judge. An RFE is tiring too, because one case has to be reviewed twice.

A reviewer has a 30-minute window to make a decision with no room for a single follow-up question.

On September 22nd, that changes. We’re putting your actual profile pitch in front of a former USCIS Field Office Director Marta Nickols, a former U.S. Consular Officer Düden Freeman, an immigration attorney, and our own Self-Sponsored Visa Expert, live.

What a treat!

It won’t be a visa decision or an eligibility estimate. But it will be the closest thing to knowing how a pitch summary is being looked at.

Former USCIS and consular officers just pulled down the curtain of how EB-1A, EB-2 NIW and O-1 get decided.

Marta Nickols spent 17 years at USCIS as a Field Office Director.

Düden Freeman ran visa interviews at the consular window.

They gave our community 45 minutes on how decisions are made.

Select sound bites (more inside America Unlocked):

- Officers get about 30 minutes per case, and the first 15 decide most of it.
- More evidence can work against you. Unnecessary documents create work and raise red flags.
- A Request for Evidence is nobody’s preferred outcome, because it means reviewing the same case twice.
- For non-immigrant visas, the consular officer has not seen your petition packet prior to the interview. They only know USCIS approved it.
- Clarity about what your achievements mean came up more than anything else they said.

Most people build their entire U.S. case guessing what the officer on the other side actually wants.

For years that person was a black box. You put your petition together, you submit it, and you hope you read them right.

We now have former USCIS officers and former consular officers, the people who used to sit at the embassies and decide these cases, working with us and telling us what actually moves a decision.

Some of it is surprising. One thing they keep repeating: a petition that runs thousands of pages doesn’t help you. They want it short and crystal clear, explained so plainly that someone outside your field understands why you matter.

Getting that kind of read from the people who used to make the call is almost impossible on your own.
